May 2020, the coronavirus pandemic is gaining momentum. In quiet, provincial Eddington, where quarantine has been declared and masks are mandatory, a confrontation is brewing between Sheriff Joe Cross and Mayor Ted Garcia, who is planning to run for re-election and has a grand project in mind: the construction of a large data center based on artificial intelligence. Unwilling to wear a mask, put up with these plans, and harboring a strong personal dislike for Garcia, Cross decides to challenge him and runs for mayor.

The long-awaited guest of Cannes from the American arthouse Ari Aster and his home studio A24 present a new film. The plot of the film “Eddington” is quite original. We see a slow-burner and neo-western set against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020 and in some remote part of New Mexico. Whether this lockdown emphasis was necessary for the film is debatable. It only adds a touch of comedy to the events. It mixes absurdity and reality, as if deflating the pathos of the tragedy, turning it into a tragicomedy.
It's not easy to talk about the plot, because revealing too much would be a spoiler, and we don't want that. In short, for example, the storyline of the character Emma Stone is completely incomprehensible. What happened to her, why she appears so little, and where she went is a mystery. The same goes for Pedro Pascal, an intriguing character who plays the mayor of the city and suddenly finds himself with a rival. But Pedro has too little screen time, dialogue, and action. Joaquin Phoenix is, as always, strong and convincing. His range of abilities is very wide and rich, from painfulness to charisma, from comedy to pity. The casting is successful and memorable.
The cinematography deserves praise. It is magnificent here and echoes the “old” Coen brothers. Southern light and surroundings, a predominantly static camera, wide shots, a calm manner, theatrical mise-en-scène with long movements, natural colors, and a lot of low-key (night shots). A very pleasant image. But is the form strong enough when there are questions about the content?

The goal of the sheriff, played by Phoenix, is to become mayor of his poor town. His accompanying exploits and mistakes do not always seem justified and logical. The finale with a chase and a shootout left questions about who is shooting at whom and why. Maybe I missed something. At times, it feels like we are watching either a dream, a bad trip, or a comic dystopia set in a poor and provincial state. Incidentally, this is where the talented Ari Aster spent his youth. So, to put it bluntly, Eddington is autobiographical. There is a mixture of nostalgia, unresolved family traumas, resentments, and dreams of a beautiful, talented director and screenwriter. Is this his best work? Hardly. Is it timely? Definitely not. He just conceived it a long time ago. Is it bold, purely authorial, and aesthetically powerful?
