The sheriff of the small town of Rio Bravo, John Chance, arrests a murderer. The arrestee's brother, a notorious gangster, gathers the most desperate thugs from around the area to free him.

The very case when an atypical movie became a "classic of the genre". Rio Bravo" is now riddled with quotes, but in the year of its premiere, this western was an icebreaker that shattered stereotypes.

The heavy and sad Sheriff Chance (John Wayne), largely out of pity, appoints local drunkard Dude (Dean Martin) as his deputy. Not superfluous is the help of a young cowboy named Colorado. The motley company is supplemented by an old jailer Stumpy, a kind of "comic assistant". Soon this strange group will have to accept the challenge of thugs from Bardet's gang.

Who is the protagonist here? Could it be the sheriff? Or Dude, who is struggling with himself, his desire to "wet his throat," his complexes, his desire to help the sheriff, and his fear of making a mistake. Whatever the case may be, the advantages of the Perfect Hero are no longer elevated to absolutes. Howard Hawks himself believes that "Rio Bravo" is Dean Martin's picture, not John Wayne's.
