Story Movie

Teddy, a worker obsessed with conspiracy theories, with the help of his not-so-smart cousin, kidnaps the head of a large company because he believes she is an alien from the Andromeda galaxy who wants to destroy life on Earth. He locks the woman in the basement and demands that she compose a message to the Andromedian emperor to receive Teddy on his ship and discuss with him a plan for the aliens to leave our green planet.

Review 4K Movie

After the triumphant “The Favourite” in 2018 and a prolonged creative break due to the pandemic, Yorgos Lanthimos is not sparing his audience and has been hitting them with adrenaline for three years in a row. We'll survive, so what the hell! And now, with Emma Stone herself as his partner-in-crime, how can we not look forward to the premiere of their new joint projects year after year? Yesterday, I watched “Bougonia,” and the conclusion is obvious: it's not the Greek filmmaker's best film, but it's moderately interesting, intense, and captivating. Especially for those who sit down to watch the film because of its unusual, catchy title and who haven't seen Lanthimos's work before. Like, for example, non-professional actor Aidan Delbis, who played the good-natured Donnie.

When a famous director works on an English-language remake of any Asian film, he needs to have strong nerves, because there is always the risk of falling flat on his face, as comparisons are inevitable. Although they were a little lucky here, the long-standing South Korean hit “Save the Green Planet!” from 2003 didn't seem to have been seen by many viewers, judging by the ratings. It was clearly a less well-known film compared to the masterpieces of that year by Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho. So there was plenty of room for the Greek director's trademark absurdity, sultry satire, and eerie grotesqueness to run wild. Just don't expect anything shocking from Bugonia, as Will Tracy's script delivers a fair verdict. Enjoy the epilogue.

The brief synopsis goes like this: two young men obsessed with conspiracy theories kidnap the head of a large company because they believe she is an alien who wants to destroy Earth. The only worthwhile intrigue is whether the obsessed Teddy, played by the wonderful Jesse Plemons, is right in his judgments. His unshakable belief that he has uncovered a conspiracy involving some kind of superintelligence is enviable, but the circumstances surrounding him still suggest a seemingly obvious conclusion: he has lost his mind and is holding a defenseless woman captive, shaving off her luxurious hair and smearing her with cream.

In the end, to understand whether you will be disappointed by the film or not, you have to watch it to the end and find out whether everything discussed in the basement of a private house is true or false. Judging by the reaction of some viewers in the theater, the crazy Yorgos Lanthimos managed to build the dynamics of the plot in such a way that attentive viewing did not lose momentum. He does not venture into the clearly inaccessible art house, but on the contrary, offers a completely mainstream art dish, without the need to think too much or invent meanings. As it turns out, the ending does not seem strange, it can only be enjoyed, as if dessert had graced the entire dinner. Absurd? Maybe. A phantasmagoria? Maybe. Utter nonsense? Well, why be so harsh?

There's no point in praising Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons; they simply maintain the standard and are incapable of disappointing. Considering the structure of “Kinds of Kindness,” you could say that they played side by side in four different films, and it's still not boring to watch them. The scene at the table followed by Teddy's emotional breakdown proves this point. And yet, against their backdrop, the neuro-exceptional (a new buzzword) Aidan Delbis, who was lucky enough to take part in such a film. A short story about how he got involved in the project can be found online. We thought the young actor was damn good, so skillfully portraying the slow-witted, curly-haired Donnie, and only after the film did we understand what was going on.

Against the backdrop of two major professionals in their field, he did not disappoint, and his character is associated with both the most touching and shocking scene. The girls in the audience gasped loudly when he did what he did. Yorgos Lanthimos is lucky that whatever he shoots stands out from the huge flow of entertainment content. As for the word “bugonia,” it is an ancient Greek ritual involving two representatives of the animal world, signifying the cycle of life and death. The descendant of Ancient Greece was apparently attracted by the opportunity to intervene in this cycle and make a significant contribution to its immutability. All he had to do was remove from the equation...

One annoying variable. Watch “Bugonia” and enjoy!
