While Shakespeare was alive, aristocrats indulged in refined nonsense, while ordinary plebeians listened to his brilliant plays for pennies. Attempts to separate William from the masses have been ongoing for 400 years—genius must be expensive and inaccessible. But all these efforts are futile: Shakespeare is indisputable proof of the depth and power of trash culture (trash): he staged his plays for pennies, stole plots from others, and deepened their impact with sex and violence (he figured out to make Juliet a minor, which his predecessors Bandello and Brooke did not do). He did not care about the sets, costumes, quality of acting, or comfort of the audience.

A parody film. But what a film! This is not a banal film from the “Very Scary Movie” category. It is a kind of masterpiece in its genre.

I highly recommend it to romantic souls with a refined sense of beauty. Troma's film will shake you up. There's plenty of eroticism, vulgarity, and dark humor here. Shakespeare himself might not have been thrilled with this film, but it's definitely worth watching. Montague is black, Juliet's nanny is a lesbian, Montague's wife left him for Capulet, and long ago they ran their own porn cinema... TOTAL TRASH! It couldn't get any worse, the creators crossed every conceivable and inconceivable boundary!

But behind all this ostentation lies a touching love story. It hasn't gone anywhere. There are even serious and far from funny scenes. Take the moment when Juliet's father beats her. It's very creepy. I think the creators touched on the issue of domestic violence here.

As for the characters themselves, I am delighted with them. Yes, they are immoral and reckless, but isn't that what lurks in the dark corners of our souls?

The ending is far from Shakespearean, but very funny. All in all, it's an unusual Shakespeare adaptation, with a lot of black humor.
