There aren't many films about business in contemporary American cinema. There are films that tell the stories of businesspeople, but few films that can concisely explain a particular business model.

Coppola's film about Preston Tucker is interesting precisely because of the structure of its narrative. From the very beginning, we understand how it will end—and the director does not particularly hide this—but at the same time, we continue to follow what is happening on the screen with interest: the story of a man who decided to compete with the recognized leaders of the American automotive industry. It is important to note that this film is not about yet another loser—it is a film about a very aggressive and daring business project. The director does not impose “methods” or “innovations” on us; we simply immerse ourselves in the world of loans, credits, and options.

I want to note right away that Coppola did not shoot a ‘big’ large-scale film. He simply adapted a story he liked with very good actors and a relatively small budget. Therefore, the attitude towards the film should be appropriate.

Just imagine if the same film had been made in the 1970s with James Stewart or Jack Nicholson in the lead role (which was the original plan) — it would most likely have been a blockbuster.
