I watched it specifically because of the director. Carpenter (once again) delighted me. He poked fun at all science fiction and turned “Space Odyssey” inside out. A debut film. The thesis project of a decent student at a Los Angeles film school.

The plot. Four astronauts are flying in a spaceship called Dark Star. Flying with them is an alien (and you say, “Alien, who is that? In five years, he'll hatch out of Hurt, ha ha ha”) that looks like a ball (filled with gas) and a frozen captain who died under extremely strange circumstances. The astronauts drop (talking!) bombs on planets that are unsuitable for colonization.

You have to agree that Carpenter is a rare breed of humorist. Yes, he has “The Big Chill” and “Body Bags,” but still, the director doesn't like to smile. That's why Dark Star is even more valuable. What kind of humorist is John? You won't laugh out loud, but you'll definitely smile. Kubrick showed how clean and serious everything was. Carpenter's characters complain in the first few minutes that they've run out of toilet paper. Ha ha ha.

In Kubrick's film, the computer's voice was male, while in Carpenter's it was female. Look at the ship itself, it's funny. Better yet, look at the film's budget. That's skill for you. Carpenter, together with his buddy O'Bannon (who tried to catch up with the alien, the future creator of Return of the Living Dead, and just a cool guy), proved that good science fiction doesn't need money, good science fiction needs heart (just like all cinema).

The atmosphere is top-notch. If someone mentions surfing, even such a small detail is bound to turn into something significant. In other words, Carpenter has no wasted shots. From his debut film, it's already clear that an unrealistically cool director has burst onto the cinema scene. It's not The Thing, it's not Starman, but Dark Star could be their younger brother. Easy.
