Being the head of a large family is no easy task. Especially if, like any self-respecting parent, you want your children to grow up to be decent people. That’s why Gil Buckman has to juggle a successful career with being a loving husband and a caring father.

You can’t really call this movie a comedy, even though it does have some comedic elements—but there aren’t many of them. In moments like when Gil Buckman’s son catches the ball and helps his team win the game, Gil (Steve Martin) shows off his “acrobatic” skills to the audience. Yes, it looks funny from the outside, but when a person is overflowing with joy, can’t they do things that those around them might not understand?

This film depicts the life of a large family, showing real life and real human relationships without any special embellishment from the film’s perspective. This is family life, and just like in any family, there are moments to laugh, moments to worry and fret, and moments to simply be happy. The main character, Gil, gets fired from his job, and when he finds out his wife is pregnant with their fourth child, the thought crosses his mind that she should have an abortion. But, fortunately, they don’t go through with it. After all, you can always find a new job—and maybe even one much better than the old one. And in the end, luck returns to Gil; he gets his job back and “welcomes” a new member of the Buckman family into the world—and on top of that, he even becomes a grandfather.

The film ends with a happy ending; of course, life doesn’t always work out that way, but still, kudos to the screenwriters, who managed to portray a truly realistic story of one big, close-knit family.
