Talent and a desire to succeed are key to achieving success. Of course, appearance plays a role too, but fans most often gravitate toward people who are more authentic, confident, and sincere—people who aren’t without their flaws. After all, this proves once again that anyone can succeed, even if they don’t fit the typical model’s standards.

This is exactly what the film’s main character, plus-size Tracy, believes. She isn’t the least bit self-conscious about her figure; on the contrary, she’s proud of it. Tracy is an excellent dancer and desperately wants to get on a TV show. Since her personality is marked by confidence and determination, her dream becomes a reality with each passing day. You can feel how actress Riki Lake lights up the entire film with her inner beauty and outward charm.

The film is directed by the unconventional John Waters, so you can expect anything from the plot—eccentric characters, fast-paced events, a mix of comedic and dramatic moments, and a farcical denouement. And Waters’ cameo as the doctor is simply brilliant.

Each character is unique and interesting in their own way. The main character’s friend, Penny Pingleton, is particularly memorable. She is a bit naive and forced to constantly stand up to her crazy mother, and the sincerity of the actress who played her, Leslie Ann Powers, is simply disarming.

Michael St. Gerard is charming in the role of Link. He really does look like a heartbreaker. But this character completely defies the notion that guys with his looks only pay attention to model-type girls.

The talented actor Divine plays two completely opposite roles in the film. But in every role, whether female or male, he is convincing and charming.

John Waters has directed a wonderful, multifaceted film that sarcastically exposes society’s flaws. As an active opponent of racism, Waters emphasizes the problem of division between people of color and white people. He shows where prejudice leads and how important it is for society to get rid of it. The film also highlights the challenges of intergenerational relationships.

The film is filled with wonderful musical numbers that make you want to dance along with the characters. The most memorable ones are “The Bug,” “Hairspray,” and “The Madison Time.”
