A comet is approaching Earth. The end of the world—which no one believed in—is coming. At night, it’s a feast during the plague. But in the morning, reality sets in. Eighteen-year-old Reggie, a master at breaking records on slot machines, her younger sister Katie, her boyfriend—a cop—and a few criminals who’ve managed to escape to a freedom they don’t really want. And zombies, crawling out into the light here and there, like rats poisoned by chemicals. And as for the rest of humanity—nothing but dust.

Once every 65 million years, an (unnamed) comet approaches Earth. No one wants to miss such a remarkable event, and people all over the planet throw outdoor parties to celebrate it. Eighteen-year-old Regina spent that night with her boyfriend and missed the big party. Fortunately, she did. The comet that swept past Earth exposed everyone who was outdoors to dangerous radiation, causing some people to turn to dust and others to become zombies (outwardly, of course, they look like zombies, but they’re closer to being rabies-infected).

Sure, the movie is dated, and sure, it’s a B-movie, but for 1984—and considering that the post-apocalyptic film genre was just emerging back then—there’s still plenty to enjoy in it today. After all, it’s like evolution—filmmakers are finding their footing, refining their plots, coming up with unexpected twists, and building a shared universe for the genre, and we should thank them for that, because *Night of the Comet* was one of the first, and its influence lives on in every film that was made afterward, is being made now, or is just being conceived.
