Story Movie

One hundred years after a gigantic nuclear war devastated our planet, all humans have fallen into two categories. Some live underground, in darkness and terror, while others prowl the barren surface on motorcycles. One of the cities turns out to be infested with giant cannibal rats that pick up the scent of blood. These are the true devils of hell, and there is no escape from them, neither on earth nor underground....

Review 4K Movie

An entertaining, yet very uneven horror film. It was shot by two directors and long-time friends Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso, whose names have become almost synonymous with Italian action cinema when it comes to quick-and-dirty productions, which, it must be said, sometimes turn out quite well. This is another such film, which can be criticized, but also praised in some respects.
The plot begins briskly, plunging the viewer into a harsh post-apocalyptic world, informing us that in 2015 a terrible nuclear war broke out, forcing people to take refuge underground in bunkers. After a considerable amount of time, one part of humanity came to the surface and began to explore the changed, cruel world, while the other remained in the shelter. The children of the survivors formed gangs, considering the stories about their underground relatives to be almost legends. One of these groups stumbles upon an abandoned city and stays overnight in a building resembling a well-equipped residential complex with all the amenities, but not everyone will survive until morning, because thousands of mutated rats are lurking all around!

The plot is simple, but it has everything necessary for a high-quality, exciting post-apocalyptic fantasy film. The authors have created a group of characters that are very colorful in terms of their different personalities, appearances, catchy nicknames, and even small details in their clothing style, making each character a memorable part of the script. The chosen backdrop for filming is equally impressive, featuring an abandoned, gray urban neighborhood with a spacious room, ominous warehouses, bedrooms, a control room, an artificial garden, and much more, shrouded in eternal darkness, where danger lurks at every turn. And the rats on the set are gathered conscientiously to create the desired frightening effect, when the gray repulsive rodents turn into a real organic sea, teeming with tails under the ebb of wet fur and glowing eyes. Even if you are not afraid of these small creatures, the sight is still impressive. The characters feast on the food supplies they find, but in reality, it's all a huge mousetrap for humans, created by a cunning, voracious brotherhood whose legions are countless — an excellent starting point for a straightforward, but intriguing claustrophobic horror film, with high-quality props for its time, creating vivid scenes of attacks and their consequences.

But just as the main action of the film begins, the viewer is confronted with the main flaw in all the work that has been done—the absurd implementation of the luxurious data available. The events that take place resemble a futile attempt to preserve priceless water in a sieve riddled with holes of stupidity. The strange tossing of the characters from side to side and the lack of logical chains destroy any viewer empathy, because it is impossible to understand the motives of the characters to endlessly wander around the rooms, fight with each other for no reason, reaching the point of nonsense, when they could simply leave the eerie abode on their own two feet. And there is no longer any desire to focus separately on the weak acting, which has never been a strong point of similar films by the above-mentioned directors, because the ill-conceived script with implausible actions and relationships between the members of the futuristic gang is a tangible hindrance to viewing.

As a result, after a truly interesting start, the film is perceived as light trash from the middle onwards, not requiring a serious approach, whose forte is in high-quality makeup and the creation of a generally tense fantasy atmosphere. However, the film deserves the attention of fans of Italian horror films that know how to entertain and even surprise, because the climax of the story is undoubtedly successful. It can be taken with a smile, as a dose of black humor from the creators, or it can be considered spectacular fatalism, a metaphorical condemnation of all humanity, which is destroying its own species by increasing its nuclear potential, the consequences of which will not lead to the prosperity of our race as we are accustomed to seeing in the mirror. In any case, the final notes of the film will remain in your memory for a long time, if not forever.
