After their first date, due to circumstances beyond their control, the mutual attraction between Bee and Ben quickly turns to hatred. Six months later, they’re invited to a wedding, and Bee and Ben are once again forced to put up with each other. This time, however, for personal reasons, they decide to call a truce and pretend to be a couple.

At the center of the story are the two main characters: Bee and Ben, who part ways after their first date, leaving each other with a bad taste in their mouths. But fate brings them together again, just as in a classic romantic comedy.

“Anything But You” set out to be a romantic comedy, but, to put it mildly, it falls short. Sure, it evokes the vibe of ’00s rom-coms (it was directed by the filmmaker behind “The Good Girl” and “Friends with Benefits”), but it still meets today’s Hollywood standards.

It’s nice to see Sydney Sweeney in a new role, although she’s constantly crying again—for reasons and without—and her performance leaves a mixed impression. The same can’t be said for Glen Power—he’s as vibrant and spirited as ever.

The screenplay didn’t offer anything new; I expected more from director Will Gluck, but one has to adapt to the new demands of the modern film industry. The setting is a real treat for the eyes—looking at the sunny Australian landscapes feels like you’re on vacation by the ocean.

And how sad it is to realize that actors like Dermot Mulroney are now relegated to supporting roles—ah… he used to play the leading man and romantic hero himself.

I guess Will really likes Natasha Bedingfield’s song “Unwritten” because it was the title track for his own film *The Good Girl*. But it’s a smart move, since the song is associated with the classic rom-com. However, the older films from the past decade didn’t have out-of-place jokes; they were more touching and authentic.

It’s not entirely clear what the Shakespeare quotes are for—they flashed by a couple of times in the first half of the movie and then disappeared somewhere.

But the movie will definitely lift your spirits and make you forget your everyday problems, because there are some genuinely funny moments—thanks to actor GaTa.

For fans of romantic comedies, it’ll do (if you can overlook the toilet humor), because there aren’t many other options. Lately, it’s rare to find high-quality, worthwhile films in this genre.

You definitely won’t want to rewatch this movie the way you would *The Switch* or *Legally Blonde*.
