Review 4K Movie

During the heyday of “black” comedies, when the Wayans brothers were poking fun at Hollywood’s cultural legacy in their own unique style, the scariest parody franchise of all was born. The idea of bringing together popular horror films is an interesting one. Since audiences had already embraced a parody of a ghetto street drama (“Don’t Mess with the South Central” parodies John Singleton’s “Boyz n the Hood”), why not poke fun at horror movie clichés? The first *Scary Movie* was based on Wes Craven’s *Scream* and Jim Gillespie’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” to which numerous scenes and allusions to other films had already been added.

The opening immediately highlights the absurdity with the “Scream” phone call, so that the victim—faced with various options for escape—can thoroughly amuse the audience. In the early 2000s, there wasn’t such an overt “cancel culture,” so the exploitation of women, racism, and objectification (all the other buzzwords of contemporary cinema) permeated this film. The murder and the unfolding of the story are presented with crude, “dirty” humor, using the tragedy as a backdrop to shake up the school and the group of main characters—Cindy, Bobby, Ray, Brenda, and Kid.

The Wayans brothers go all out, delivering skits and jokes even in places where no one expects them. And the tense suspense surrounding the mysterious killer only adds a sense of gravity to all this absurdity. At the same time, the film doesn’t veer entirely into comedy; it retains elements of horror and intrigue. After all, high school students do end up dying (typical 30-year-old American high school students).

The narrative explores several plot tropes, poking fun at sexual orientation and intimate details, with a touch of ghetto-style humor from Sean and Marlon Wayans. Despite the satire and humor, the film interestingly integrates the plot of *I Know What You Did Last Summer* into Creek’s blackmail, as he doesn’t simply stalk his victims but employs specific methods of persuasion. Speaking from personal experience, I watched this parody before Wes Craven’s original film, so the final twist in the original thriller took me by surprise. In the parody, the Wayans brothers play off the already familiar climax, leading us into a new parody and surprising us with the villain’s identity.

By stripping away the core thriller elements, we’re immersed in a classic Wayans comedy, where smoking, bongs, drinking, and constant fun take precedence over the genre’s horror. Jokes about the maniac with the bubble blower, the “dude,” and the comedic adaptation of bloody violence come across as hilarious. An excessive focus on the same joke might seem repetitive, but the film even pokes fun at this trope.

The main characters open up to one another as the student body on campus dwindles noticeably. Moreover, each character is given the chance to shine in one way or another. The ending remains open-ended, leaving Anna Faris’s character in fear. It mocked, parodied, and set the bar against the backdrop of *American Pie*’s popularity. Given this, Shannon Elizabeth’s appearance was already a given parody.
