The most interesting thing is that Quentin did not limit himself to tears of boundless happiness at the screening and admiring reviews for Kar Wai Wong. It was he who promoted the film in the United States and sealed its fate at the U.S. box office. And although the receipts, of course, had little effect, but in Hollywood about Kar Wai talked, and his 'Chungking Express' went around the world. And understandably so, for what we have before us is a madly beautiful and dynamic elegant romantic sketch, a picture devoid of flaws and stunning in its execution.

The events unfold in contemporary Hong Kong, where several very different people meet, fall in love, break up, suffer, get into unpleasant or ridiculous stories and fall in love again. Two young cops who don't know each other visit the same diner from time to time and both suffer from a love that has 'expired'. One for a stranger named May, with whom he has been inseparable for five years, the other for a sexy stewardess who has 'flown away' to new adventures. One collects canned pineapple until a strange drug dealer with big problems and a gun in a small lady's purse who never takes off her sunglasses bursts into his life. The other is talking to toys while he has a crush on that very café worker, a fantasy-prone girl who listens to 'California Dream' loudly.

Although actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Kar Wai's favorite after Chungking Express, has not yet awakened to international fame, this is probably one of his most sincere roles, standing on a par with Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love. Later on there would be the famous original 'The Departed' - 'Double Castling', and the Cannes Festival winner 'Lust' by Ang Lee, and the colorful 'Hero', and 'Battle of the Red Cliffs'. However, we won't see those enchanting loving eyes he showed us in 'The Chungking Express' anymore. At least, not yet. Although, maybe I should, because I have not seen 'Happy Together.

After watching this movie we are once again convinced that the early Kar Wai Wong - an amazing and amazing director, who lost his uniqueness in Hollywood. 'My Blueberry Nights' can only be enjoyed by those who have not seen his earlier works. Compared to 'Chungking Express,' 'Love Mood,' and even the weaker '2046,' the American 'Blueberry Pie' offered to us is a blatant Hollywood faux pas. The question is, why? All of his Chinese films are world-famous, and his early works have never failed to get the attention of the Cannes Film Festival jury. With all due respect to Jude Law, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman, I demand Tony Leung, Maggie Chung and Bridgette Lin back, and instead of blueberry pies, I hope to see noodles and canned goods again.

Anyway, watch 'Chungking Express. It's a great movie. A movie with charisma.
