Review 4K Movie

'Orphan: First Kill' was in its day a breath of fresh air in a horror genre that had run a little dry after the era of slashers and ghost stories. It was good for everything - it was interesting, it was intriguing, and the lovely Isabelle Fuhrman was pure evil, despite her pretty face. She is one of the few child actors who could not only play her role well, but pull the whole movie off. The final twist, however, I think, could only be guessed by people already familiar with the story, because it took place in reality as well. Thirteen years after the release of 'The Child', the film suddenly got a prequel with the intriguing tagline 'There's Always Been Something Wrong with Esther'. Personally, I don't think The Child needs a sequel, a prequel or a reboot. It's a great, logically complete story. But as they say in Hollywood - money won't make itself, so even after so many years you can always parasitize on good works.

Orphan: First Kill.

My impressions of this movie were mixed.

On the one hand, I liked the movie. It is interesting, even though we all already know what happens at the end. The creators even tried to make a twist, in order for the movie to have at least some intrigue, because we already know the story of Esther. The cast was very good, the timing did not seem to drag on and the events unfolded the way they should. I also liked that we saw a lot more of the real Esther in this movie than in the previous one. In the first part she was almost always in the image of a child, here half the time she acts like an adult and we can see her emotions in those moments when things don't go according to plan.

On the other hand, that's not what I was expecting from the prequel Child. It's not. For me, 'Inception' was supposed to be about Esther's journey of becoming. What made her this way, how she ended up in the asylum and why she chose this life path. Instead, in 'The Beginning' we are told in the middle, when Esther has already managed to fool around with everyone around her, effortlessly escaping from the cops, asylums and other places where no fool can get away. In fact, we're just shown the same thing as in the first film, only with a different family. Why? We've already seen it. If the film is meant for those who haven't seen 'The Child,' then why should they be interested if in the first 5 minutes of the film we are retold everything that happened in the first part? Who, then, is this movie meant for?

To summarize, I conclude that I would have liked the film if it wasn't a prequel to 'Child of Darkness'. In the light of the slag that has been released in the horror genre in recent years, this film can't be called the worst or even bad. The only thing that spoils it badly is that the makers could have done better. They could have made a horror movie worth reviving after 13 years. Instead, they made a shoddy movie, repeating the first film almost entirely, which will easily be forgotten after a couple of hours of viewing.
