I watched this movie and I still don't understand what the deeper meaning of it was. It doesn't seem that the goal was to show how bad it is to live with ruined nature. And how, in fact, it is necessary to protect it. As the main character of the movie is the only one who has this goal. All the rest feel quite comfortable eating synthetics, wearing synthetics and breathing synthetics. In general, this civilization successfully exists without wildlife and is completely unwilling to spend material resources on its restoration (although at first there were such plans).

Against this background, Freeman's attempts to prevent the destruction of the plant domes not only look pointless, but they are also harmful (especially considering the way he did it and what it cost his colleagues on the station). The further flight in company with the helper drones, during which Freeman gets a chance to lose his loneliness and reflect on what he's done, is not particularly sympathetic. For the character got what he deserved.
