Alfred Hitchcock always had a certain pantheon of actors with whom he created his masterpieces. These are: Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, James Stewart. And suddenly, in 'Torn Curtain' are actors, well, it would seem, completely 'non-Hitchcockian'. Julie Andrews is a brilliant musical actress. Prior to this Hitchcock has already filmed in his movie singer - Doris Day ('The Man Who Knew Too Much'), but there she had the role of a former pop star. And the great Paul Newman, the creator of unforgettable roles in psychological dramas and westerns.

And here on the genre of spy thriller, where a lot of adventure, danger, love and humor.What is only worth the first scene on the ship under the blanket. Hitchcock ends the movie with the same scene, ironically looping the story: Paul Newman looks back and covers himself and his fiancée with a warm blanket, looking extremely indignant - they say, you have been following us for 2 hours in a row, and now let us be alone, we deserve it.

The main characters on the eve of their wedding went as spies 'for scientific purposes' behind the 'Iron Curtain' in the GDR. They will, of course, have something to tell their grandchildren. But that's later, and for now you have to try very hard to deceive East German intelligence and find out the secret formula, while solving personal problems. In Hitchcock, this is an often present collision: love on a detective-adventure background. And Hitchcock masterfully, with his inherent grace, plays out this story. Constantly keeps in suspense and irony.

Here Hitchcock was in danger of 'falling' into pure politics (which he later did in 'Topaz'): after all, two nice Americans on a spy mission get into the GDR. But Hitchcock did not bore us with stories about the confrontation of the two political camps (which was the easiest thing to do), he pleased the viewer with a great adventure story, made with unique irony and grace.

And Andrews and Newman make a fine pair. They did a great job with their roles.
