When Marwan's brother and sister familiarized themselves with their mother's will, they were surprised beyond measure. Her last will was to find their father, whom the twins thought was dead, and their brother, whom they did not even know existed. Jeanne and Simon learn that their mother had carefully concealed from them many of the circumstances of her tragic fate.

One of the characters in the movie said - “Death is never the end of the story. It always leaves traces” - and this phrase can fully characterize what will take place on the screen for two hours.

After the death of Nawal Marwan, her twin children Jeanne and Simon receive two envelopes from a notary, which they must give to their father and brother. At the same time, their mother had said before her death that their father was dead, and this was the first time they had heard of their brother at all. Together with the envelopes, the notary announced the last will of the deceased - “...to be buried without a coffin, without clothes and without prayer. The face should be turned toward the earth and the back toward the world. No headstone shall be placed on the grave and the name shall not be engraved anywhere ...” and only after the envelopes have been handed to the addressee, according to the will, can a headstone be placed. Such a shocking beginning to the movie sets the tone for the entire story that follows.

The movie smoothly balances between the present and the past, revealing not only shocking “skeletons from the closet”, but also the mores of the Middle East, as the beginning of the movie starts from the 70s. The movie raises questions of religion, morality, politics, retribution and revenge, and, of course, maternal love. Such a rattling cocktail, which splashes out on the viewer, with a shocking denouement, that personally I, for some time after watching the movie and could not come to my senses.

The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Non-English Language Film of the Year, but lost the statuette to the Danish film Revenge. Susanne Bier's movie is certainly not a bad movie, and it can compete with many others in terms of passion, but I think the Oscar should have gone to the Canadians. This is the case when the movie is dramatic, interesting, exciting and makes you think about life and what is happening around us.
