Story Movie

Former sheriff George Blackledge and his wife Margaret enjoy a quiet life on a ranch in the mountains of Montana. The tragic death of their son forever destroys the measured way of life of a pious family. Now all they have left is their grandson, who by chance has fallen into the hands of a cruel and dangerous family Weeboi. For the sake of the boy's return, the couple are ready to go to the end.

Review 4K Movie

Kevin Costner loved to star in movies in which the heroes gracefully ride horses, and courageously look into the sunset. I read that horseback riding is a great massage for the prostate, so Kevin combines useful and pleasant.

George is a former sheriff, so he manfully wrinkles his creased brow and stares sternly out over the horizon, symbolizing the triumph of decrepit law over muscular crime. Having defeated all available criminals, George enjoys a vacation at the family ranch. He is accompanied by his wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandson. The son dies, and the grief-stricken daughter-in-law summons a fresh-faced groom from the bench and leaves, taking her son with her. The grandparents believe that the new father does not give the child proper upbringing, and decide to snatch the baby out of the hands of the scoundrel....

If you are expecting from this movie the same as from 'The Honest Thief' - an exemplary flogging by a pensioner against the young, your expectations will be only partially realized. Of course, there will be a flogging (and otherwise it was not worth making this movie), but only the most patient will wait for it, and its outcome will be a little bit different from what you would like.

The movie evokes mixed feelings. On the one hand - it is impossible not to share the indignation of the grandmother and grandfather (the grandmother is more indignant, the grandfather doesn't care) - their granddaughter has been slapped in the face! On the other hand - where are the guardianship authorities? Legal state? Ombudsman for Children's Rights? Why do pensioners, instead of enjoying kefir and therapeutic mud, have to restore justice (as they understand it) and lynch them? This is America! The standard of democracy, and human rights! Bezucha, what are you doing? Why are you destroying our crystal dreams of our beloved USA? And then you bring in a herbivorous Indian riding a no-name horse. The suffering of indigenous peoples oppressed by US imperialism. And also (what racism!) there is not a single African-American in the frame, not even a flimsy, stooped gay man in cowboy boots and a hat! The director is clearly not on trend.

The Wiboy family, who steal Costner's grandson, are characterized as 'dangerous'. What's dangerous about them, I don't get. The director doesn't tell us who they are? What they do? All that is clear is that the family is large, and part of it is 'people of nothing' and part of it is 'dangerous, very dangerous'. They look like common country bumpkins, and they behave the same way. Big, fleshy assholes living in a rundown, ramshackle wreck. Not Mafiosi or oligarchs, but... what if they're raised on chicken droppings? “Only the Wiboys have real, hard eggs!” ? It's not clear, and it doesn't matter. What's important is that they're 'bad', although up to a certain point, they don't commit illegal acts, but the pensioners who commit vigilante justice are 'good'.

In general, it turned out to be a mixture of a road-movie (most of the movie, the heroes drive a vintage car, and enjoy the view of meadows, rivers and mountains of Montana), and 'Saving Private Ryan', well, I mean 'Saving Blackledge's grandson'. As is usually the case, in order to save the life of one 'good' boy, good people have to kindly kill a few 'bad' ones. This is called humanism.

One can try to see symbolism in this movie. 'Grandson' is the result of the US presidential election, stolen by the 'dangerous' from the 'good'. The 'good' return the 'grandson', justice is restored. This is nonsense. Personally, I saw in this movie the story of a feisty, despotic grandmother, with contempt for family values and the law, who dragged her phlegmatic, lethargic pensioner husband into a bloody showdown. Well, she knows better what's good for everyone. The old flabby goodness triumphs again.
