I would like to commend this very wise and heartfelt film.

It is a simple and unhurried story about the life of old Sully, a small-town man who has spent most of his life away from his family, whom he once abandoned. Fate gives him a chance to make up for it when he meets his son and grandson. The bad father suddenly realizes the possibility of being a good grandfather...

I don't remember the last Paul Newman movie I had a chance to see. I had forgotten the actor Paul Newman. And in this movie I got to know him all over again...and I was amazed. I was amazed at the way he plays with his eyes, how much warmth and love is in them. And in the scene where he walks into his father's long abandoned house, and, for a moment goes into himself, his whole life flashes through them.

What I really liked about this film was the way the relationship in Sally's family, the father-son, grandfather-grandson relationship, was shown. Sally skips over her son's sharp jabs, smooths over the 'sharp edges', helps him settle his conflict with his wife, and takes her grandson for a ride in his old Ford, sometimes letting him drive.

Sally has a lot of little problems in his life: he has a bad knee, his employer bullies him, the local policeman gives him a hard time, and his only friend borrows money all the time. But to spite everyone, he retains his boyish fervor and his urge for recklessness. He easily and repeatedly steals a snowplow, drives his car on the sidewalk in front of the police, etc. But that doesn't stop him from being a wonderful old man and a 'real man,' who even though everyone is poking fun at him, it's obvious he's loved.

I was very surprised, but it was interesting for me to watch him, his beautiful neighbor, the nice conversations of these old people, to see their life. I was so pleased to absorb the characters' profound dialogues, the abundance of funny and clever jokes. And I felt very warm on this winter evening from this picture. Yes, it is very warm, and there is something elusive about it that I can't describe. But you can read it all in the look on Sally's face...
