Story Movie

Transylvania, 1893. Jonathan Harker, a young librarian, arrives in the village of Passo Borgo, having been hired to work for Count Dracula, a local aristocrat. As he gets to know his mysterious master, Jonathan soon learns the Count's true nature and realizes the danger he and his wife Mina are in. One by one, people are mysteriously dying around them. It seems that only Abraham van Helsing, who has already met on the Count's path, can change their sad fate.

Review 4K Movie

In fact, for the second time in his career, Dario Argento turned to screen adaptation. Previously, he had made do with original stories. In his 'animal' trilogy ('The Cat with Nine Tails', 'The Bird with the Crystal Plumage', 'Four Flies on Grey Velvet') and the 'Three Mothers' trilogy (Inferno, Suspiria, Three Mothers), Dario created his own realities. These realities were so accurately detailed and real that there was not even any doubt.

I will suggest that two literary works that have been repeatedly screened kept Don Dario busy - Gaston Leroux's 'The Phantom of the Opera' and Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'.

Earlier Argento has already made his own, with inherent in his author's style, gloomy, imbued with a mysterious dungeon, “The Phantom of the Opera”. Only Argento could do such an interpretation of Gaston Leroux.

When it was announced that Argento would take on 'Dracula', I wasn't expecting a simple linear adaptation. As expected, Argento simply took the plot of a well-known work and built a very unexpected story around it.

Why unexpected? Yes, it's simply all about the numerous screen adaptations of Dracula and Nosferatu. There are so many of them that the basic stamps regarding the location, Mina and Dracula, Van Helsing have long since been formed.

The biggest achievement of the movie is the visual decisions. Dario Argento managed to create a superb, vibrant color scheme. It is the color scheme, among which, as it is not surprising, bright green prevails in this picture.

It is important that even in the night shots, the narrative is practically not conducted in a black and red color paradigm. Such color decisions, in close connection with the detailed description of rural life (to the detriment of the traditional Gothic 'passions in the castle') gives the film a special charm.

The vampire, in fact, is not at all opposed to Mina or Van Helsing, he is opposed to nature itself, of which he is the antipode. By the way, Thomas Kretschmann has done an excellent job.

Kretschmann plays an element, something that is no longer human. Calm and poised, he does not strive for posturing at all (as many other performers of the roles of Dracula and Nosferatu).

Other acting work is secondary. For example, Asia Argento is not at all surprising, mostly just reminiscent of her existence in a small role. Nor is Rutger Hauer's performance as Van Helsing surprising. The elderly actor, by himself, is extremely colorful, which is already more than enough for the role.

Again, the main thing here is not the plot or acting. The main advantage of the movie is visual solutions. Soak in the atmosphere created by Argento. The scenes with wolves in the night forest are worth a lot, as well as the hypnosis of Mina by Dracula.
