July 6, 1897 Russian schooner "Demeter" leaves Bulgaria for London. In the port of Varna on board are taken several heavy wooden crates with the image of a dragon, seeing which, one of the newcomers immediately leaves the team. And for good reason - on this voyage the remaining sailors and the black doctor who replaced the one who left will have to face Count Dracula himself, who rises from the crate at night to drink fresh blood.

The movie is based on the story of the very ship that arrived in an English port without a crew on board, but with a very bloodthirsty and dangerous passenger. And although the story of the ship and the crew's death in Bram Stoker's work takes up very little space (only a few pages), it was enough to spin the story and create a full-length movie about the misadventures of the crew of “Demeter”.

So, the ship's crew picks up cargo in the port of Varna (that's Bulgaria), as well as new crew members. As soon as the ship sets course for England, creepy things start happening on board and it becomes clear that someone or something has come aboard in Varna. A very bloodthirsty, dangerous and insatiable something.

The movie is really an extended version of what happened on the ship on its way to its destination. Naturally, many of the story lines are fictionalized (that's why five pages of the work turned into two hours of timekeeping), and therefore they have nothing in common with Stoker's novel.

The picture, directed by Andre Evredal, is very reminiscent of the first part of “Alien” (which, by the way, the director said to himself), only the events have been moved to the past and instead of a spaceship here is a floating ship.

All the same atmosphere of doom - the crew members are practically deprived of chances for survival. The same elusive monster. All the same deaths - one after another, one after another ...

Only if we evaluate the level of suspense - the one in “The Last Voyage of Demeter” is not even close to the level that was in “Alien”. Though at times of course the viewer tries to look into the black screen and understand where the bloodthirsty vampire is hiding.

By the way, if we continue to draw analogies with “Alien”, we can find a common feature with the third part of “Alien”. There is Dr. Clemens there, and in “The Last Voyage of Demeter” such a person is also listed. Both are doctors and both are essentially the main positive heroes fighting a mysterious enemy.

But there is a factual error in “Demeter”, because the action unfolds in the late 19th century, and the first dark-skinned students in Cambridge began to be admitted in 1918 (when you watch it, you will understand in what place this mistake was made).

The look of Dracula himself at first glance seems cheesy, the graphics look too comical and the cult monster clearly does not pull on such an imposing character played by Gary Oldman in the 1992 movie. However, if you look at Dracula's face, it's clear that his appearance was taken from 1979's The Salem Vampires. Plus it was based on Dracula's appearance from 1922's Nosferatu, Symphony of Terror.

And hence the look of Dracula boarding a ship called the Demeter may not be considered cheesy in terms of computer graphics, but rather a reference to classic vampire movie projects.

The movie turned out to be far from the most successful from the point of view of the Dracula story, but it deserves attention as a part of the Dracula story - the part that not so many pictures were devoted to.

The graphics are quite good, as is the cast. Well, yes, there are some questions about the main character - somehow Corey Hawkins' face doesn't seem to be as brutal and suitable for the role of a hunter for evil. Well, we have to come to terms with it already at the tenth minute of viewing.

The final picture as if hints that the continuation is possible. In addition, it is possible that Universal will try to restart the series of pictures with classic monsters. The first of them was Dracula and “The Last Journey of Demeter”. And in this movie, there is a reference to the next classic monster - the Wolf Man.
