Review 4K Movie

Horror movies are a rare phenomenon in the world of 'other cinema'. You can count them on your fingers, if you don't confuse horror and thrash, and all of them are directed not outward, but inward. While Americans look for evil in Iraqi terrorists, little girls, and brutal maniacs like Freddy Krueger, authors from the world of high art have long realized that the roots of evil in the human soul, and there is nothing more terrible than a deformed psyche. The consequences of this deformation are explored in her debut film, Marina de Van.

Previously, the gothic Frenchwoman made her mark as an actress and screenwriter for François Ozon, and then she gave 'In My Skin' a loud and uncompromising statement about herself. She is not only the director of the picture, but also the screenwriter and the protagonist. Marina de Van said more in an interview - that she identifies with her.

Esther is a beautiful, 30-year-old female clerk with a stable income and a handsome boyfriend. From the very beginning, there is something crazy in her eyes that threatens to ever break through. It all starts with a deep cut, a breakthrough. Esther doesn't notice that her leg is torn to shreds until three hours later, 'this never happened in medical practice'. The whole movie is a performance of the protagonist cutting open her flesh with tin cans, examining the bruises and enjoying them like a cannibal. She carries the scraps of skin in her wallet, eats her hands with relish, and while looking at the juicy chunks of meat, she can't resist stabbing herself squarely in the thigh. No sense, no logic, just self-discovery, or if you will ego in an extremely neglected phase.

Vincent, her boyfriend, alas, can't help her. He doesn't even make much of an effort to figure out what's going on with Esther, only that he can't see her mutilated legs. And in fact, the rest of the plot is a backdrop for a scene of self-indulgence bordering on sexual pleasure. It's as if her body doesn't belong to her, at one point even doubting that she's in pain.

And Esther herself, on the verge of psychosis, doubts whether it is her leg, after the joke of the trauma doctor. When in the restaurant the psychosis crosses the line, the allegory of someone else's body reaches its climax, the arm separated from the body lying on the table. And then she herself, as with her lover, goes to a motel, where with herself, a stranger, enjoys an erotic dessert - her own blood.

The finale is left open. Whether Esther devours herself, or accomplishes many more good things in her life, does it really matter? She was able to comprehend her darkest side, which is not given to each of us, studied herself literally from the inside, devastated, and wanted to preserve at least a piece of skin.
