The Big Heat is a solid detective film from German classic Fritz Lang. Thanks to the excellent direction of an experienced master and the acting, the film does not seem derivative, even though it uses almost all the tropes of the genre.

The main character is a great guy, a wonderful family man, the intelligent and honest Sergeant Dave Bannion, who takes on the case of the death of his colleague Tom Duncan, who was connected to the local mafia boss Mike Lagana. But the sergeant will find this out later. For now, it seems like the case is closed—gunpowder residue on the dead man's hand and temple leaves no doubt that it was suicide. But soon, Dave gets a call from Lucy Chapman, a prostitute and the dead man's ex-lover. Convinced that Duncan was helped to die, she tells him about Duncan's strained relationship with his wife and his country house, which is unlikely to have been bought on a police officer's salary. The next morning, Chapman's mutilated body is found in a ditch.

The police chief, who is sometimes corrupt and sometimes cowardly, does not like the fact that Dave continues to dig into the case and pesters Tom Duncan's widow with questions, who, incidentally, is a very important figure in the case. The sergeant first receives threatening phone calls, and then his wife is killed by mistake. This is followed by an investigation by our hero, who has already been suspended from work, fueled by his desire to take revenge on the killers.

If Lang were to shoot his film now, it is highly likely that the producers would not allow him to do without abundant shooting from all kinds of automatic weapons and other attributes of modern cinema, which increase the spectacle but reduce the viewer's emotional connection with the hero. As it is, one explosion, a few hand-to-hand fights, and a few shots are a modest embellishment to make a good, realistic story about good guys and bad guys.
