Story Movie

Joe and Marion Starrett, along with their adventure-loving son, struggle to survive on their ranch in a rugged frontier town. One day a rider named Shane comes to them and asks for water for himself and his horse. Joe complies with the request. A short time later, Shane is already helping the family defend the ranch from the villainous Riker, who is seizing land for cattle grazing. Shane stays to work on the ranch and gradually becomes a friend and hero to little Joey.

Review 4K Movie

Director George Stevens was known as a perfectionist, that is, as a director of thoroughly thought-out and carefully calibrated shots, with the filming process accompanied by numerous retakes, etc. All of this served, in my opinion, to good effect for ‘Shane’—especially in terms of the cinematography. The magnificent picturesque landscapes of the American West, the mountains, the valley, the river with its clear water, the wild deer that wandered into people's yards early in the morning... it's impressive! As are the bright, warm colors of the newly emerged color cinema. It's no wonder that cinematographer L. Griggs won an Oscar for this film. However, when it comes to merits and awards, Shane is clearly not lacking: for example, personally, the most impressive fact for me was that the film was included in the AFI's 2008 list of the ten best Westerns in the history of cinema, and took third place in that list! And I completely agree with this assessment - the film deserves it.

A mysterious horseman named Shane arrives in the valley where the immigrant farmers live. The noble face of Alan Ladd, who plays the lead role, leaves no doubt that he is a positive hero! Shane stays for a short time at the home of farmer Starrett (Van Heflin), and while he is there, he witnesses the men of wealthy rancher Riker harassing the homeowner. Shane learns that Riker considers the valley his land and is doing everything he can to get the settlers to leave. Shane decides to stay in the valley and starts working for Starrett. Starrett's son and wife (Jean Arthur) become attached to the new tenant. While watching, I even came up with the assumption that Starrett would most likely be killed in some kind of trouble, and Shane would then stay with Starrett's wife and son. But no, everything turned out differently.

Riker's men continue to harass farmers throughout the valley, and when the farmers come to Riker's saloon to shop, they are humiliated in every way possible. Shane was also insulted by the cowboy Calloway (Ben Johnson) on his first visit to the saloon, but he endured it. Some suspected Shane of cowardice. The grand fight when Shane came to the saloon for the second time is quite impressive! Shane and Starrett, who rushed to his aid, fought powerfully and skillfully. But the fight further exacerbated the relationship between Riker and the farmers. Riker called on the help of gunfighter (in this case, actually a hired killer) Wilson (Jack Palance) — a man in a black hat with two Colts on his belt, whose expression clearly shows that he is Shane's opposite and his obvious rival. Wilson kills one of the farmers. Starrett is challenged to come at night for negotiations about the future of the valley. Starrett is going to go, but unlike Shane, who has been warned, he does not know that it is an ambush and certain death. And this is where the film reaches its climax! Shane and Starrett must decide which of them will go to the deadly meeting, which of them will have the RIGHT TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF in the battle with Riker's men, the RIGHT to save his friend, his family, and the future of all the farmers. A fierce dispute over the RIGHT to go to a deadly meeting - isn't that a paradox!

There is a lot of interesting information about the creators of this legendary film. 1) Just before filming Shane, George Stevens won an Oscar (for directing) for his previous film A Place in the Sun (1951). 2) Alan Ladd. This charismatic actor died tragically at the age of 51. His role in Shane remains his most famous role. 3) I was very surprised that Jean Arthur was already 52 years old at the time of filming—she looks no older than 40 on screen! And another thing: Shane was Jean's last film role, as well as the only color film in her career. 4) Jack Palance had the most surprising fate of all. It turns out that the real name of the actor who played the sinister killer Wilson is Vladimir Palagnyuk (!), and this man's life is full of many amazing facts. Palagnyuk-Palance achieved serious success in professional boxing, served in the air force during World War II, burned in an airplane (!), and then, due to the burns he suffered on his face, played only negative characters for the rest of his life. Forty years after filming Shane, he received an Oscar for his role in City Slickers! Such are the amazing fates and such is the extraordinary film that brought all these fates together. Oscar for his role in the film City Slickers! Such are the amazing fates, such is the extraordinary film that brought all these fates together.
