Story Movie

The year is 1247. Robin Hood, now an aging criminal and murderer, lives as a hermit with no home of his own, and is being hunted by the relatives of the people he has killed. One day, while trying to help his old friend Little John—now known as Edward—overcome yet another group of enemies from his past and save his family, Robin is seriously wounded. To save his friend, Edward takes him to a remote monastery on an island and leaves the wounded man at the door, hoping that they won’t let him die there.

Review 4K Movie

The trailer didn't disappoint—they promised a dark drama and an unconventional take on a well-known character, and they delivered it in spades.

From the very start—right from the opening credits—the film plunges the viewer into the Dark Ages, with brutal and violent scenes where no one is spared: bloody brawls and gruesome skirmishes. Michael Sarnowski, director of the acclaimed *The Pig*—who also wrote the screenplay—masterfully creates an oppressive, joyless atmosphere, in part through the use of old folk songs. This makes the contrast all the more striking when the second half of the film begins—darkness gives way to light, and the natural scenery becomes even more beautiful. It’s as if there are two lives—before and after.

The director maintains a good pace, and the plot is engaging to follow, even if the narrative unfolds in a fairly traditional way. Plus, everything is shot beautifully and captivatingly—the cinematography, the on-location filming, the medieval setting with its castles and wastelands, and the lighting—it’s all fantastic!

The actors are great, too. The star of the show here, of course, is the seasoned Hugh Jackman, and he shows everything he’s capable of. Whether it’s raw, primal rage, despair, pain, emotional turmoil, or redemption—everything is portrayed at the highest level, and in the finale, he reaches his peak. Jodie Comer is also excellent—an interesting character with her own nuances. I liked Bill Skarsgård in the small role of Little John—he’s almost unrecognizable with that beard.

All in all, it’s a powerful and dark film. Solidly directed and well-acted.
