Story Movie

Moscow, 1930s. A popular playwright is accused of anti-Sovietism: his play is canceled and he is expelled from the Union of Writers. At a bad moment in his life, he meets the beautiful Margarita, who is deeply unhappy in marriage, and begins a new novel, the heroes of which are people from his neighborhood, including the mystical character Woland, copied from a foreigner he knows.

Review 4K Movie

Prologue: the master recounts his story to his neighbor.

The 1930s. A young writer is preparing to stage his play about Pontius Pilate. Suddenly, his play—which has undergone thorough review—is taken off the bill. After these events, he meets Margarita. The married woman charms him, and gradually their whirlwind romance grows into something more. Along the way, the writer encounters dark forces capable of drawing him into inspiration beyond the control of the simple mind. In this world, there is no criticism. There is only her and his story.

Actors: there are many of them, and they all did a great job. It's a treat to watch the main couple of characters rather than the other minor characters.

Everything else: why wasn't the film called Woland? On the one hand, it would have been original. On the other hand (from the viewer's point of view), you understand that it would have been a mistake. A separate story about the dark lord who tells not his own fate, but that of others? Imagine that. They might as well have had Behemoth (who, by the way, is Maine Coon here) tell their story. I had this idea a long time ago (to make a spin-off about the Cat-Behemoth), but over the years it faded away until I remembered it today.

I haven't read Bulgakov's novel in a long time. Lately, I've been absorbed in another book with lots of different references, but that's not the point. Filming a novel is a complicated thing. Sometimes it's very easy to adapt it for the screen, like when I was little and saw an accurate adaptation of Bulgakov's novel. All the cream of the crop were there and remain so: from Abdulov, Kovalchuk, and Oleynikova to Galkin, Basilashvili, and Filipenko. Everyone chooses which adaptation they like best. But the characters themselves are more shocking in their madness than in their masquerade. Strip them naked (men and women) and they will all perfectly embody their characters with their familiar demonic nature and in submission to Woland, leaning on everyone with an ominous smile.

What did I see here? The shock value of events, interspersed (again) chaotically. There is no doubt that the average viewer (towards the middle of the film) will get confused, but I admit that the story is very beautiful. The modernist movement, led by the prince of darkness himself, is not going to pity people, but rather teach the system not to get carried away. It's nice to watch the crowd of people who gathered for the musical and get what they want. I smiled at the scene of them tearing off their clothes in the dressing room and putting on dresses. And there are sizes for men too, try them on.

The script by Roman Kantor in collaboration with Login is written with interest. This long-term project has been itching to see the light of day for a long time. And now the authors have presented the world with another dose of a daring, ingenious, criminal, and much crazier story.

The special effects begin to work at full force closer to the finale. If at the beginning there was an invisible destruction of the critic's apartment, by the finale the computer graphics gain momentum with greater force. Dizziness from the upside-down world or the world turned inside out is guaranteed. But I endured all three hours of the film.

Special praise goes to the cinematographer, who created one of his best works.

Anna Drubich perfectly conveyed genuine fear and strong emotions while the main character was rereading the novel. Of course, the title theme from the 2005 series during the ball is missing, but I don't think it would have fit here. This film has its own aesthetic.

Impressions: I have no complaints; I liked this bizarre love story. Decide for yourself. Is it fiction or truth?
