Review 4K Movie
Esquire semi-stereotyped-semi-mythical journalist Lloyd Vogel is a middle-aged man with obvious psychological problems. Everything, as always, from childhood: his mother died when Lloyd was a child, and his father, Jerry Vogel, could not stand it and soon left the family. The journalist is invited to the sister’s wedding, but, having learned that his father will be at the festival, he almost refuses to go. Lloyd declares a long toast from the stage and is about to leave, but her fellow Jerry is trying to start a dialogue ... and soon receives in the face for an incorrect remark about his son’s mother, a scuffle begins. The next day, Lloyd gets a job at work: the editors need an article about the hero - extremely kind presenter of children's television program Fred Rogers.
This is the plot of the plot. History, of course, does not shine with originality and complexity. At some point I even want to ask: did the script, by chance, gather dust on the shelf not from the nineties - the heyday of family television shows and good cinema?
This combines the film with a considerable part of the iconic premieres of 2019: “A beautiful day in the neighborhood” is also turned to antiquity. The reverent director Mariel Heller, of course, didn’t take pictures of the time. Her story is not about an era, but about a person who makes the film no longer related to Irish and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but to Clint Eastwood's Drug Courier. At the center of history is also an absolutely romantic hero - an elderly idealist, a man of principles and beliefs. That's just old Eastwood interprets this image as a character with its own problems and shortcomings, which is mistaken and ultimately punished. Heller, on the contrary, elevates the leading children's television show to the rank of saints, thereby bringing to the forefront the long-forgotten archetype, born, possibly even during the Great Depression. They say that it was then that happy endings came up.
Fred Rogers is the embodiment of absolute goodness, pure and concentrated. He, in essence, is the main character of the story, and Lloyd Vogel is just one of his friends, a patient, if I may say so. The meaning of Fred’s life is to help others. Rogers inspires everyone around him, with the help of simple songs and puppet characters, he talks with children on important, sometimes even scary topics: divorce, war, etc. All that Rogers wants is to become a friend to everyone. The host of the children's television program is like an angel sent to the earth by God to help people. Heller does not explain to us the nature of his holiness: Fred’s wife says that he is like this from the moment of the meeting, and she didn’t see him with others. Fred Rogers - in the modern world view of cinema - an irrational character. “There are no such things,” any self-respecting Russian director will tell you and will rethink the image of a little man for the hundredth time. And maybe this is just the kindness, hope and lack of a modern viewer?
The actors coped with their roles well: Matthew Reese, who embodied the image of a broken journalist, as he called himself, is believable, and this is important. Chris Cooper, as if fused with the role of a controversial father, is also beyond doubt. An unprecedented benefit is betrayed by Tom Hanks as a saint. The remaining characters are pretty boilerplate, but played flawlessly.
“A beautiful day in the neighborhood” sounds like an old record, played not even in a new way, but simply anew. This is the strength of the new film by Mariel Heller: he brings to us the old values of the old cinema, resurrects the classic image of pure goodness and reminds the viewer that you need to pray for the people around you, support them and learn to finally forgive. But whether a new world that has a "Survivor" and a "Joker" needs a "Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" is another question.
