Story Movie

Thirty-five-year-old Carla Bem is an ordinary secretary in a real estate office. Her whole life consists of daily routine work and loneliness at home. In addition, Carla is very hard of hearing. Review 4K Movie

35-year-old Carla Bem has been working as a secretary in a trading company for quite some time. However, her workaholism, as expected, has not brought her any dividends. Carla is paid little, and she is treated even worse. Every other colleague, whether chauvinist or sexist, tries to make her life miserable or wipe their feet on her. What else can an unattractive, hard-of-hearing old maid, who clumsily hides her hearing aid under a fluffy hairstyle, expect in this cruel world? She was probably hired only to be paid less as a disabled person.

But when 25-year-old Paul Angeli (a mustachioed Vincent Cassel, who looks almost like a younger version of Mikhail Boyarsky) joins the company as an intern, having just been released from prison after serving two years for theft, fate gives Carla a chance to get her revenge. In the homeless and clumsy Paul, she recognizes someone like herself, an outsider, and immediately takes him under her wing, knowing full well that each of them deserves a better life. With admirable shamelessness, Karla begins to forge her own happiness, no longer wanting to be a wallflower or a doormat.

In response to her concern, Paul tries to repay her as best he can, that is, in the most straightforward way possible for a woman: by having sex with her. However, how could he know how complex the inner world of an overripe virgin is, what taboos Karla has to break and what sacrifices she has to make in order to simply enjoy sex? In the end, the two find complete mutual understanding not in carnal pleasures, but in abilities hidden from prying eyes: lip reading and robbery, which perfectly complement each member of this “sweet couple”...

If at first the plot of Sur Mes Levres resembles “In Love of My Own,” then from the middle onwards, there are also parallels with “The Land of the Deaf,” with the only difference being that here, the hearing-impaired heroine helps her accomplice thanks to her ability to read lips. Jacques Audiard studies two almost clinical cases of loneliness with the intensity of an entomologist, ultimately drawing from the criminal plot not a banal tabloid intrigue, but something that a poet once described so beautifully: “Here, the soil and destiny breathe.”

This melodramatic thriller about two adventurers turns into a harsh existential drama that promises a series of discoveries, including a new acting name. The success of this film was largely predetermined by the participation of Emmanuelle Devos, who, in a fierce battle for France's top award, the César, in the “best actress” category, beat Audrey Tautou herself in the role of the famous Amélie Poulain. And it must be admitted that she won quite reasonably, not through connections.

And it's not even that characters with physical disabilities traditionally have a better chance of being recognized with all kinds of awards. It's just that Devo underwent an internal and external transformation that is rarely seen on screen these days. An unattractive woman, if ever there was one, with huge bulging eyes and a large fish-like mouth with thin lips, she appears to be the real heroine, in whom, despite the lack of external glamour, the potential of a very great actress can be felt every second.
