Brilliant criminal investigator Lincoln Rhyme is injured and confined to bed for the rest of his life, which may not be as long as planned. Now he has only one finger, his neck muscles, and his powerful intellect at his disposal. Link seriously considers ending his life, but an unusual murder case piques his interest. He enlists the help of young Amelia, a headstrong but capable police officer. The case grows more and more complex with each passing hour, and the killer predictably turns into a maniac. He has no intention of stopping, each time devising increasingly gruesome scenarios for his victims.

A good old-fashioned thriller with a “the killer was the gardener” ending. Almost all of the action takes place in various unpleasant locations: sewers, an abandoned pig slaughterhouse, etc. You understand that such a background only adds to the already gloomy atmosphere that permeates the film. Denzel Washington is traditionally good. Without getting out of bed, he created a very coherent image with rather sparse strokes. His character does not seek pity from those around him or the viewer, but nevertheless evokes quite strong emotions. Angelina Jolie did worse. At times, it seemed that she did not really understand what was expected of her. Her childhood trauma does not come across in the film, and it is not clear why this information was included at all. Yes, her home is a mess, and yes, she is in no hurry to marry her boyfriend. If this is how the character is supposed to be portrayed, then I can say with complete confidence that it failed. And, of course, there are the completely fantastical revelations of an ordinary patrol officer at the crime scene. It's just ridiculous. Link saw “something” in Amelia and now he's letting her be the first to examine the crime scene! While watching, I wanted to shout at them: “She's just a patrol officer! It takes a long time to train a forensic scientist!” However, Amelia-Angelina finds everything she needs, and Link, who has written several textbooks on forensics, is increasingly bursting with pride for his pretty protégé. But I still couldn't understand where her talents lay. In her big expressive eyes and plump lips? Well, she found a bone left in a conspicuous place, and after that, the rest of the film keeps telling her how clever she is. Apparently, forensics is not my thing.

Otherwise, the thriller was a success. There is tension, which is the main measure of quality for this genre. If you are willing to put up with a couple of bold assumptions, which I have already mentioned, then it is still worth watching.
