Nicholas, a small-time crook and alfonso, dates only those women who are able, if not to support him, at least to keep him afloat. This film is based on real events. The real Raymond Fernandez, of Spanish origin, and American Martha Beck (here they are called Nicolas and Coral) met in the United States in 1947. At that time, he was 33 and she was 27. Soon after, they began their criminal journey across the United States, which is described in detail in the film's synopsis. Their criminal “adventure” ended in 1949 thanks to the vigilance of one of their victims' neighbors. The police suspected that there were at least 20 women who had been visited by the “Lonely Hearts,” as the couple was nicknamed.

The story, with the exception of the ending (although the outcome is the same in any case), is told in a very realistic way. The actors were chosen very accurately—if you believe the photographs, they look extremely similar to the people they portray. The characters, their feelings, and their motives are shown as vivid and real. It is undoubtedly an unattractive story, but it is presented in a high-quality and believable manner.

In 2005, a Hollywood film on the same theme, Lonely Hearts, was released, attracting much more attention from viewers than Deep Crimson, which was undeservedly overlooked. Although the Hollywood counterpart is inferior in every way to the less popular and less star-studded 1996 Mexican-Spanish film.
