John Carpenter is not a director for everyone. He makes films that most viewers don't like. However, in Carpenter's films, the characters mainly fight some kind of evil in the form of vampires (Vampires), dead sailors (The Fog), street gangs (Assault on Precinct 13), Chinese magicians (Big Trouble in Little China), aliens (The Thing), etc. He never touched on the theme of madness and insanity in any of his films until he started writing the script for a movie called In the Mouth of Madness.

The film tells the story of an insurance investigator named John Trent. John is an experienced “wolf” who considers most of the people who turn to him for help to be frauds and fools. One day, he receives an unusual request. Sutter Cane, the world's most popular horror writer, who has surpassed even Stephen King in popularity, has unexpectedly disappeared. John must find him and figure out the reason for his disappearance, but he doesn't yet know what he's about to face.

An excellent film! No kidding. Carpenter has strayed a little from his traditional theme of the protagonist's struggle with the unknown. The film seems very confusing, in the spirit of David Lynch's films, but at the same time it is exciting and tense, keeping you on the edge of your seat. To some extent, this is thanks to the lead actor, Sam Neill. Neill gives it his all; his character Trent starts out as a complete realist, but by the end becomes a frightened paranoid, going mad under the heavy burden of responsibility that has fallen on his shoulders. Julie Carmen, on the other hand, disappoints. In principle, it's not her fault, as the role itself is flat. Jürgen Prochnow is unimpressive, playing a typical villain.

Overall, it's an excellent horror film, rated between a B-minus and a C-plus on a five-point scale.
