One of the many strengths of Michael Mann's brilliant film ‘The Hunted’ is its diverse, memorable soundtrack, which does not contain a single weak track. That is why the enchanting creation by German composer Klaus Schulze, entitled ' Freeze," which accompanies the demonstration of Hannibal Lecter's camera (then played by Brian Cox), does not stand alone, but, like its counterparts on the soundtrack, immerses the viewer in the meditative, almost cosmic atmosphere of the film. Following the trail and getting acquainted with the music album, which originally included this very Freeze, I discovered not only Schulze's work, but also the little-known Austrian psychological thriller Angst, for which the German composer recorded this album.

The maniac, played extremely convincingly by Erwin Leder, is released after 10 years in prison and immediately sets about satisfying his insatiable bloody needs. Director Gerald Kargl, to his credit, immediately refused to romanticize or demonize our “hero.” He is not a seductive intellectual like Lecter, nor is he a glamorous narcissist like Patrick Bateman, but neither is he an infernal evil like Max Cady from the remake of Cape Fear and other similar characters. Our ‘hero’ is an ordinary pervert, somewhat untidy, nervous, repulsive, excitedly transforming his unbridled fantasies into grandiose plans, each of which inevitably collapses and leads to the simple hysteria of a maniac. He is not particularly cunning or sophisticated. In a fit of ecstasy, he drinks the blood of his victims, but in the next second he vomits. This is much easier to project onto reality, which is why it is genuinely uncomfortable to watch the adventures of this fantasist.

The film itself turned out to be quite disturbing and moderately repulsive, with Schulze's music adding tension and dynamics to the already energy-charged chiller episodes. The film looks quite decent, with beautifully chosen locations, but the camera work is particularly pleasing—it seems to hover around the characters, giving the viewer the feeling of an invisible, ghostly presence at the scenes of the scumbag's atrocities, and at the right moments, it zooms in for a close-up that vividly expresses the character's vile, repulsive nature.

Overall, it's just an interesting and believably filmed day in the life of a maniac. In principle, it's not necessary to recommend it, as sick fans of gore and gourmets with delicate psyches are unlikely to find anything special in this film.

Strangely enough, A Freeze was not featured in this film. Instead, I thoroughly enjoyed the paranoid and rhythmic Surrender.
