Dora, a former teacher, earns money by writing letters for illiterate people who come to Rio de Janeiro's Central Station. Indifferent to her customers, she charges a dollar per letter, and another dollar if they ask her to send it. And she doesn't send all the letters. Josué, 9, and his mother also use Dora's services. They write to their father. Josué has never seen his father, but he dreams of meeting him. Then one day, when his mother dies, the boy is left all alone in a huge city. The elderly Dora had no interest in her clients. Sitting in the passageway of Rio's Central Station (de Janeiro), she hastily wrote their letters on paper, sometimes correcting the text with well-known clichés, received her fee, and immediately turned to the next one.

Returning home in the evening, Dora and her friend Irene reread the naive stories, deciding whether to throw them straight into the trash or hide them in an overflowing drawer so that someday they could finally drop the envelope in the mailbox.

They also laughed at a letter from a lonely woman asking her husband Jesus to come and see their grown-up son, Jose. Sarcastically remarking that the alcoholic husband had run away from his wife, the women decided that this silly letter could be put aside until better times.

A bus that ran a red light flattened the boy's mother on the asphalt pavement. The boy, who had lingered at the crosswalk, screamed and tried to get under the killer bus, but someone's strong arms, closing his eyes, dragged him away: scream or don't scream, it's all over.

What awaits orphaned Jose in crowded Rio? Sleeping on concrete floors, hunger, theft... How do train station thefts end? If caught, execution on the railroad tracks. A nine-year-old child simply cannot survive here. Surviving is not easy.

They planned to send the cute Jose to be adopted in the States, but the deal fell through, and his former teacher had to go with the desperate boy in search of his missing father. The road trip that began in this way made up the main part of this interesting film.

What is so special about Jose? He is a completely sincere and open child. Acting like a child, he always tells the truth about what he sees and thinks. It is not easy for the calculating Dora to deal with him, oh how difficult it is. The boy is one of those who can stir and make even the most hardened heart beat. And Dora's heart still remembers a lot.

Fernanda Montenegro (Dora) is an excellent actress. However, the film's success would have been impossible without the brilliant Vinicius de Oliveira. He is a phenomenal child, whose work deserves only the highest praise. And the description “wonderful” does not seem excessive to me in this case.

Experiencing many twists and turns of a long and difficult journey together with the cheerful boy, Dora reevaluates much of what constituted her lonely life, changing her established views on people and human relationships. The boy's wisdom and persistence destroys her life experience, prompting her to seek new solutions to old problems.

The search is long and unsuccessful. It seems that the two of them will never find traces of the elusive Jesus and Jose's two older brothers, Isaac and Moisha. Their mother wrote about them in that old letter. Names are symbols. Fragments of a former family? Or...
