Story Movie

The turbulent life of one of the largest cities of the planet is shown from a completely unfamiliar point of view. The everyday life of homeless children and small hawkers, pimps and prostitutes, drug dealers and policemen, urban lunatics and kings of the criminal world. Bombay is a whirlpool that pulls everyone who plunges into its life.

Review 4K Movie

A film that breaks down the usual stereotypes about Bollywood!

A film reminiscent of the magnificent City of God and Slumdog Millionaire, only shot long before either of them.

It is a story about how a diverse mosaic of people, different fates, different characters, small joys, and great tragedies come together in India's largest city.

The main character of the film is a 12-year-old village boy named Krishna, who by chance finds himself in Bombay after the circus troupe he was performing with abandoned him to his fate, leaving him without any means of support. Hoping to earn the coveted 500 rupees for his family and return to his native village, he gets a job as a tea delivery boy in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. He has nowhere to live, so he settles under a bridge in the company of other homeless children and teenagers.

Gradually, Krishna makes new friends, representatives of the “urban underworld”: Chilim, a small-time drug dealer who nevertheless becomes his best friend; the little girl Manju, the daughter of a prostitute working in the red-light district; and the taciturn “new girl in 109” — a 16-year-old girl sold to a local brothel, whom everyone calls “Sweet Sixteen” and with whom he later falls in love.

Baba, a local authority figure, pimp, and drug dealer, controls everything in the district. He is respected, influential, and calculating, but often cruel and mercenary. Baba is Manju's father and the owner of Sweet Sixteen, and Chilim worked for him for a long time. After an incident with a foreigner to whom Chilim sold drugs without his boss's knowledge, Baba furiously throws him out onto the street. This is the last straw, after which Chilim rapidly degenerates and loses all control over himself.

Seeing what is happening to his friend, Krishna is faced with a choice: either continue to slowly sink to the bottom, or remain a human being to the end, pass all of life's trials with dignity, and become a real man...

In addition to the good script and excellent direction by Mira Nair, it is also worth noting the excellent cinematography, the play of light and shadow in the frame, the music by the famous composer Lakshminarayan Subramaniam, and, of course, the superb acting of the child actors, who, incidentally, were recruited in the slums of Bombay and actually lived on the streets. It is a pity that such a wonderful film is little known.
The film will be of interest to anyone who cares about auteur cinema, for those who value the idea behind a film more than flashy special effects, for those who care about the problems of child homelessness and poverty, social injustice, and for those who remember that cinema is not just Hollywood commercial productions.
