Story Movie

Elphaba is now known as the Wicked Witch of the West and lives in exile in the forests of Oz. She continues to fight for the rights of animals whose voices are suppressed and tries to reveal the truth about the Wizard. The Good Witch Glinda becomes a public symbol of goodness, lives in the Emerald City palace, and enjoys the benefits of her popularity. At the behest of Madame Morrible, she addresses the people of Oz, assuring them of stability under the Wizard's rule. As Glinda's fame grows and she prepares for her wedding to Prince Fiero, the sorceress begins to worry about her broken relationship with Elphaba. Glinda's attempts to reconcile Elphaba with the Wizard are unsuccessful, which only deepens their conflict.

Review 4K Movie

Universal Studios immediately decided to make two films based on the famous Broadway musical Wicked, as the producers had no doubt that the duology would attract audiences and easily recoup its costs at the box office. The first part of Elphaba's adventures in the Land of Oz grossed over $700 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing musical in history. So the producers really hit the jackpot and proved they were right. Director Jon Chu's Wicked: Part 1 recouped the production costs for both parts, and there was no longer any need to worry too much about how the sequel would perform at the box office. However, it is still worth noting that the second film in the series underperformed significantly, barely exceeding $500 million in box office receipts. In the US, audiences continued to enjoy Wicked, but interest in the series waned worldwide, which I think is quite natural.

The plot of the second part of Wicked takes place several months after Madame Morrible named Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West, after the heroine refused to serve Oz and fulfill his demands. Now Elphaba flies across the country and frightens Oz's legions, while trying to help poor animals oppressed by the authorities. In fact, Elphaba does nothing particularly radical or striking, but rather plays pranks. So, to be honest, I can't take her struggle seriously. For some reason, she can't challenge Oz, even though she has all the power to do so, and instead engages in all sorts of nonsense that only elicits an indulgent smile.

Meanwhile, Elphaba's friend Glinda tries to play the role of the Good Witch, who defends the Land of Oz and helps the disadvantaged. This role is not very easy for her, because lying for so long and tediously is difficult in any case. But what makes Glinda happy is that Prince Fiero, with whom she is in love, is by her side. However, Fiero is actually unhappy, which adds to his sadness, and therefore Glinda herself is confused... Here we have an example of a rather superficial and not very expressive melodrama, which is very tiring and does not particularly help the plot to move forward.

I understand perfectly well why American audiences rated the second part of Wicked so highly. For them, it is a special story, and they have loved it since its Broadway debut, agreeing to overlook all the flaws in the story. For all other viewers, the second Wicked no longer seems as magical as the first. The problem is that the second half of the musical is catastrophically short of events for a full hour, which is why the plot constantly sags and stands still. And the authors lacked the courage to show a more daring and provocative struggle between Elphaba and Oz. It was important for them to present the audience with a simple and cute fairy tale in which there is absolutely nothing scary. But as the disappointing box office receipts show, this was a mistake, even though the duology as a whole paid off and brought in a decent profit.

I was very disappointed that the second film did not pay much attention to Oz. He had every chance to become an iconic and noteworthy character, but Jeff Goldblum was given only one musical number and was once again pushed into the shadows so that he would not take time away from Elphaba and Glinda. I believe that such an actor and his dramatic potential were not properly revealed in these films. But it was still nice to see Goldblum in a big Hollywood project.

Evil Dead: Part 2 concluded the story and brought it to its logical conclusion. Not everything pleased me here, and the plot doesn't grab you until the very end; it seems a little superficial and drawn out due to the wrong decisions made by the writers. Nevertheless, in terms of visuals and acting, this film is capable of interesting, but certainly not delighting.
