A group of city teenagers go motorcycle riding in the mountains. One of the hot-headed daredevils hits a small boy to death. The inconsolable father of the dead child seeks revenge and turns to the local witch for help. The old witch tells him how his own blood and the blood of his murdered son can be used to awaken the Demon of Vengeance. Thus, a terrible monster, the Pumpkinhead, appears from the netherworld.

Hollywood wizard Stan Winston, who gave us fantastic films like "Jurassic Park" and great horrors like "The Wrong Turn" made his directorial debut in 1982 with the horror "Pumpkinhead", which was released in Russia under the title "Revenge of the Demon". The film tells of an inconsolable father who went to extreme measures to fulfill his revenge - called from the depths of hell Pumpkinhead demon ...

Despite the fact that the movie is responsible for Winston, special effects for this tape did not make it. Pumpkinhead is the brainchild of Tom Woodruff Jr. ("Alien 4"), who played the character in a special costume.

Woodruff is a professional, so the monster here turned out great. Pumpkinhead is still considered one of the most famous and frightening monsters in world cinema, and one of my favorite monsters - a huge, ugly "punishing sword of justice", fearless and ruthless. One you can't get rid of so easily. He's creepy enough, he's tall, and he kills his victims in a variety of ways, though the kills are far from the main focus of the movie. He has long paws and long claws, with the help of which he can climb trees and grab his victims from there. But not only special effects are valuable in the picture - Winston should be thanked for the wonderful atmosphere, despite the fact that the picture sags in some places, which can be put down to the lack of professionalism of the maestro in this field.

The characters of the film are walking meat, and though you understand that they made a mistake and repent, you can't feel sorry for them. At the same time they are killed quickly enough and their function of "walking meat" turns out to be justified.

The movie is full of quite spectacular scenes - the episodes with the sorceress, the first appearance of the demon, the episode in which the demon arrives in the hut (a creepy hunched shadow of a freak against the background of the door) or, in fact, the ending. At the same time, all this is generously seasoned with a wonderful gloomy atmosphere, episodes of monster appearance and some general nuances.

Separately we would like to mention the game of Lance Henriksen - a man who needs no introduction and made a name for himself in the horror genre. In spite of the fact that he did not shine everywhere, he is undoubtedly a talented actor, and in this movie he did a hundred percent - he perfectly showed pain, uncertainty, thirst for revenge, remorse.

The camerawork and music do not cause any complaints. The camera does not twitch, in some places there are a couple of successful decisions in terms of angles and pictures, the music adds suspense to the narrative and contributes to the enjoyment of the picture. There are slow melodies and quite dynamic ones

As a result, we have one of the best horror movies of the time, and one of the scariest monsters in particular. The strongest movie with wonderful acting, directing, and technical execution. It is highly recommended for viewing.
