Story Movie

The story of the friendship between two witches from Oz - the evil Elphaba and the good Glinda.

Review 4K Movie

Waiting 13 years to see a film adaptation of one of the most successful and beloved musicals of our time is definitely a challenge for any fan. For me, Wicked is a story that has been with me for 15 years. I've grown up on the songs, the plot, the characters that have become a part of my life. And now, finally, the long-awaited movie has become a reality. Despite all my bias, I'll be blunt: the movie adaptation lived up to all expectations. It's not just a movie, it's a real immersion into the world of Oz, where good and evil intertwine, and the characters show what really matters.

About the plot and characters

For those unfamiliar with the original story, Wicked is a reimagined take on the classic Wizard of Oz tale, telling the story through the lens of the two main characters, Elphaba (the future Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the future Good Witch of the North). The musical, which has become iconic since its premiere on Broadway in 2003, focuses on their complex relationship, from rivalry to a deep friendship that transcends many barriers.

The movie begins with the familiar scene where Glinda burns an effigy of Elphaba in front of a cheering crowd, and immediately shows the contrast between how Elphaba is perceived by society and how she really is. This is not just a battle between two “witches” but a profound drama about the choice between good and evil, the struggle for one's identity and place in the world.

Elphaba and Glinda: A story of opposites and growth

Elphaba is a central character whose name has become synonymous with being an outsider. She symbolizes those who do not fit into society's standards, who face injustice and judgment. She embodies the idea that “evil” and “good” are not black and white concepts. She does not strive to be perfect, but represents inner strength, kindness, and a willingness to help despite a world that rejects her. Elphaba is someone who sacrifices herself for others, and it is this sacrifice that makes her a tragic yet heroic character.

Glinda, on the other hand, is the opposite of Elphaba, symbolizing outward success and social acceptance. At the beginning of the story she is frivolous, concerned only with how she will look in the eyes of others, but as the story progresses her character develops. Glinda learns to be honest with herself and others, realizing that outward attractiveness and popularity are not everything. She begins to overcome her weaknesses and become a better person, which makes her character especially multifaceted and human.

The expression of the actors and the embodiment of the world of Oz

One of the main strengths of the movie is the impeccable performance of the actors. I was initially hesitant to choose Ariana Grande for the role of Glinda, but her performance pleasantly surprised me. She did a great job with both sides of the character - comic and dramatic. Her charisma and emotionality make Glinda not just funny, but genuinely touching.

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba is just perfect. Her vocal performance is stunning and the emotional depth of the character is captivating from the first scenes. I was captivated by her performance even after the movie Harriet, and here she confirmed her talent to the fullest. The interplay with Grande was excellent, their on-screen relationship felt real and genuine.

In addition to these two stars, other colorful characters appeared in the movie. Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero was top notch: his charm and chemistry with Glinda made his character multi-faceted. And Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible was great, as always. In addition, there were nice cameos by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who played Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway. This moment was a real treat for fans of the musical.

Conclusion

“Wicked” was a movie that lived up to all of my expectations over the years. It touched on important themes and showed how hard it is to be honest with yourself when society imposes its standards. The musical and its adaptation touch on deep and relevant issues, make you think about the choice between good and evil, and how people can be misunderstood.

This movie gave me a whole gamut of emotions, from joy to sadness, and even though this is only the first part of the story, I'm looking forward to the sequel. If you, like me, are a longtime fan of Wicked, this movie will be a treat for you. And if you are just being introduced to this world, you will discover something incredible and touching.
