A strange film. A film that leaves you with a feeling of... not quite incompleteness, but rather unfinished and raw. It feels like the authors simply didn't know how to end their work and got out of the situation in the most banal and unexpected way. Like, that's it. Everything seems to be exactly as it is. It's a shame. A real shame. Because if the authors had treated their work with the respect it deserved and had a strong desire to finish it differently, we could have ended up with a masterpiece. A true and genuine one.

So where is all the splendor that keeps the film from being written off as rubbish? It's impossible not to admire the actors' performances. And it's not even about Nicole Kidman, who simply plays as she knows how. No more, no less. After The Hours and Dogville, it's hard to be surprised by anything in her acting. It's filigree work. It's all about the other actors who were on set. Almost all of them created vivid, memorable images that seem to stick in your brain like a million tiny sawdust particles. I don't even want to list them all individually, because the merits of almost every one of them are undeniable.

Two-thirds of the film is shot in a strikingly uncomfortable and cold manner. The images of people, their actions and thoughts, and the magnificent music playing in the background make you just sink into your seat and feel a kind of inner discomfort. The film draws you into its world. It makes you look at everything not through the eyes of a critic or viewer, but through the eyes of the characters in the film. And this is both terrible and magnificent at the same time. It's terrible because you really get into the skin of a character who finds himself in such a situation. It's terrible to realize that you're going crazy and there's no way out, that you're in a stalemate with no way out.

The film has all of this, and the first two-thirds of the running time are a true extravaganza of cinematic art in its purest form, but unfortunately, towards the end, the film descends into some kind of illogical and inexplicable pit. A hole that appears out of nowhere and looks ridiculous in the context of the chosen narrative style. Like a speck of dust in your eye. You want to shake it off and continue enjoying the action. But no. It doesn't work.

Suspense is built up over a fairly long period of time. It is done masterfully and tastefully. But suspense must ultimately lead to something. And the better the prelude, the more magnificent and spectacular the dénouement should be. But here, there is none. Just none. The film ends, it ends quite logically, but at the same time so frivolously and banally that you simply refuse to believe it.
