Story Movie

The story of the creation of the album Nebraska by American musician Bruce Springsteen.

Review 4K Movie

At first glance, this film seems rather restrained, one-sided, and even unattractive. You watch it for ten minutes, then half an hour, then over an hour, but your suspicions about whether this is really a biographical film about one of America's rock icons only grow stronger. Apart from a few fairly ordinary performances, there are practically none of the usual attributes of the genre: the plot does not tell the story of a rise to fame, the main character does not drink alcohol by the liter, does not use drugs by the kilogram, and does not embark on promiscuous sexual adventures with different women. The script lacks shocking scenes and outrageous shots. Everything is quiet, intimate, and down-to-earth. You will not see a slacker, a hooligan, or an alpha male Casanova from the world of rock music, but a complex Bruce Springsteen, lost in his own thoughts, who really needed to be saved from a terrible non-existence.

In the early 80s, the New Jersey native is already a star after the release of the albums Born to Run and The River, always accompanied by his kind, helpful, and sensitive manager John Landau. His parents were in good health, although his father suffered from some kind of illness, he had no wife or children, and he shunned the fame that had come his way. In general, the 30-year-old man didn't even seem like a rock star. When you looked at him, he seemed awkward and hunched over. When sitting at a table with someone, his head would fall to one side, and he would avoid eye contact, either out of fear or unwillingness. And now this man is on the verge of recording his most personal album, which will later be titled Nebraska. Like a brutalist, he decides to change his approach to recording songs: the material should sound as it was originally conceived, with a raw sound, the use of echo, and a rejection of rough arrangements in a studio with sophisticated equipment. Of course, both his manager and the label are shocked. On top of that, Springsteen doesn't want any press, touring, or his face on the cover.

As they say, he's a genius, he knows best. But the fact is that during this period, the musician delves deeper and deeper into himself, remembering his childhood, which is remembered not so much for its happy moments as for frightening black-and-white images involving his alcoholic father. Added to this chaos are various literary, musical, and cinematic works that bring Bruce Springsteen to such a state that viewers who know nothing about his career and life are forced to wonder if he is heading for sudden suicide. We are just such viewers, who previously knew nothing about the singer except for the song “Streets of Philadelphia.”
How glad we are now that we didn't get lazy and went to the morning screening at the cinema to see the film about the author of the cult album of 1982. This is not just a biopic, but a stunning film about depression that slowly eats away at you from the inside, with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Yes, you're not mistaken, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nothingness delicately touches on this painful topic. A man in his prime really does sink so deeply into a black hole that he is on the verge of not being able to take it anymore. At the beginning of the film, we thought that the main character's love interest in the form of a girl named Faye, a single mother working as a waitress in a diner, appeared too quickly. Then this storyline appeared from time to time in the plot, and we couldn't understand the purpose of it. But towards the end, the plan is finally revealed when they sit down together to talk frankly, and it is the woman who is frank, exposing the fears of the confused man with her words. Bruce Springsteen is a runner; it's easier for him to run away from everything, but then it's not easier. Without realizing it, he is rapidly sinking into the unknown and darkness. As a result, the most heartbreaking scene is the visit to the psychologist, and the polite old man...
He asks him to share the reasons for visiting his office, whether in general terms or in more detail. At this moment, the camera is focused exclusively on Jeremy Allen White's face, medium shot, silence. Instead of any words, he reacts to the psychologist's request in such a way that it is impossible to hold back. Fortunately, no one saw our tears, another viewer was sitting much higher up. Here comes a vivid catharsis for the hero, without unnecessary words and emotions, and it is so contagious that the viewer cannot resist it. It was also interesting to learn later during the final credits that Bruce Springsteen continued to struggle with depression, but it was comforting to know that he was not alone. Clearly not the best, most exciting, or typical biopic about a famous musician, but emotionally, the film hits the mark, turning you inside out and leaving you feeling empty. One of the rare contemporary works that we recommend watching. An emotional storm is guaranteed.
