Review 4K Movie

In the run-up to this film, I heard only one word: B BOLDB . For example, it’s bold because the film managed to attract world-class talent: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Seamus McGarvey (cinematographer), and Martin Scorsese (producer). But given the general public’s dislike for this genre, is it really fair to call this boldness? Let’s try to figure it out.

Plot. Grace and Jackson move from New York to the mountains of Montana, into the home of her late uncle, to build a life in a cozy corner of the world: just the two of them and their love. Time passes, a child arrives, and their boundless love and passion gradually fade away. Their secluded paradise turns into a nightmare, where madness is just a step away.

I’ll start by noting the acting: it’s fine, but nothing more. Robert Pattinson has always been good at portraying a blank, detached gaze (though for some reason he added that look in “Batman” too, but whatever). And, of course, Jennifer Lawrence. Without a doubt, this is another entry for her on the Oscar shortlist (I’d even say this project is aimed at that). But there’s one caveat (my subjective one): I don’t like one-note roles of a single emotion + Lawrence sometimes overdoes it. She’s not a bad actress, but she needs to be reined in. And Lynn Ramsay let her do as she pleased, which led to periodic lapses into all sorts of excesses that are exhausting.

To be honest, I don’t really like movies where the synopsis tells you everything (and even more) in two lines. I didn’t see any great (or even moderate) love from the very first frames (just hardcore sex, but that’s a different story). Everything is steeped in discontent from start to finish. The film has an extremely high entry barrier: the first 50 minutes are a struggle to get through, especially for the unprepared viewer (the people walking out of the theater are proof of that). If you stick it out, though, a thought begins to emerge: this is a film about a woman in distress. She has a child (who isn’t given much screen time), a jerk of a husband (at least they really tried to portray him that way, but {in my opinion} it’s debatable), no one around her understands her (even though they showed something completely different), and her desire to live and do anything has long since vanished (though it wasn’t visible at the beginning either). The issue of postpartum depression is important—no question about it. But an hour into the film, a realization hits: essentially, not a single word has been said. Although, no, there is one thing: this woman herself masterfully created all these problems, from which there is no way out. A dead end!

An extremely destructive idea that offers not even the slightest hint of a solution (except for the one shown in the final scene). All the instances of support and help led the protagonist back to the exact same state she was in. The film doesn’t answer this or many other questions; it leaves the viewer to struggle with guesses and speculation. And I am strongly opposed to this approach in cinema.
