In the 1960s, New York City’s “Hell’s Kitchen” neighborhood was a place ruled by priests and mobsters. Four friends grew up there; their carefree childhood was cut short by a terrible tragedy that thrust them into an adult world of violence and cruelty. We live in remarkable times. Here, virtues have long since been turned upside down. Murderers pass righteous judgment; a former criminal becomes a devoted and faithful servant of God, showing fatherly care for his parishioners; and those who, by virtue of their duty and convictions, are meant to serve, protect, and help, are hidden—yet no less terrifying—monsters.

Sometimes people are left with just one thing. The one thing they’re willing to cling to with all their might. It’s the only thing keeping them afloat, preventing them from plunging headfirst into the abyss of the despair that’s swallowing them whole. These guys had friendship. It couldn’t be taken from them, and it never will be. It will bind them together, guide them through hell, help them survive, but it won’t withstand the burden of the past and will ultimately make them so different.

This film is about the search for light in the pitch-black darkness of broken souls. And no matter how hard they try, no matter how much they want it, not everyone will find that light... For some, it will no longer help. And only death will put an end to this endless turmoil and bring peace. Some will see only a fleeting glimmer, which their conflict with their own conscience will prevent them from reaching. And some have already grown accustomed to living in darkness, and the long-awaited light only reopens wounds that have barely begun to heal.

This film is about friendship, revenge, and struggle, about a chance event that turned lives upside down and shattered them. But at the same time, it is about something greater. About what lies deep within and makes us human. And even the theme of revenge looks somewhat different here. It is not retribution in the usual sense. It is a return of things to their rightful place, a correction of the universe’s mistakes. After all, everyone must answer for their actions. And while God’s judgment is something distant and debatable, it is unlikely one can escape human judgment. But will this belated restoration of justice bring peace of mind? It won’t bring peace, but it should certainly soothe the conscience. But none of that matters much anymore. After all, our heroes remained those children who never meant any harm. They stayed there forever, each in their own personal prison. But maybe they’ll be able to sleep peacefully?

This story has touched too many people. Even those who weren’t involved. A priest, whose faith is being tested, undergoes a journey of cleansing his own conscience for sins he didn’t commit. He dedicates his faith to restoring justice. And what is the point of faith if it is impossible to punish the guilty and live at peace with oneself? Or the girl whose dreams and aspirations remained in the distant past and were destroyed by a terrible reality.

Each of the characters in this story has sacrificed something. But the ability to sacrifice for the sake of and for the benefit of others is the highest degree of human virtue. And a wonderful reflection of ourselves.

The acting is simply mesmerizing. One could speak at length about the incomparable Robert De Niro, about Brad Pitt’s outstanding performance, about Dustin Hoffman, who fully revealed his character through just a single dialogue, about the repulsive scoundrel portrayed by Kevin Bacon, and all the other wonderful actors who flawlessly performed their roles. But this is one of those cases where words simply don’t matter at all. You just have to watch and enjoy.

The soundtrack strikes precisely those chords of the soul that want to respond to this story.

Barry Levinson has directed a film as pure and bitter as a tear. A story of humanity set against a terrifying present and a horrific past. One of the defining films of the 90s, which every true cinephile—and every self-respecting person—should see.
