Mariano De Santis is lost in memories of the great love of his life. The feelings that once shaped his destiny may now change it once again. Mariano is the President of Italy and is preparing to step down, but before he leaves office, he must make a series of extremely difficult decisions. The public and those around him are holding their breath in tense anticipation.

At some point, we realize that a person who, by virtue of their office, must make a fateful decision does so not based on the circumstances of the specific case, but guided by the events of their own life.

But the film *Grace* illustrates this with such elegant clarity that one is tempted to include it in the curriculum of law schools.

Mariano De Santis, the President of Italy, who must review a euthanasia bill and two petitions for clemency before the end of his term, is actually preoccupied with trying to figure out who his wife cheated on him with forty years ago.

Taking a drag on his only cigarette of the day, he turns to his long-deceased wife every time—who is he! Who was he back then, forty years ago! The secret is known, but not revealed, of course, by a longtime family friend, Coco Valori. There is no way to get to the truth. And this seems like an unsolvable problem that brings life itself to a standstill. Without the truth, one cannot move from one thing to another; one cannot move forward.

The entire film revolves around the truth, and with it—its main character. As the author of a seminal textbook on criminal law, among other things, Mariano explains why he chose this particular field. “Criminal law,” he says, “attempts the impossible—to uncover the truth.”

“But that was forty years ago! All the statutes of limitations have expired!” exclaims his daughter Dorothea when her father suddenly tells her about this long-ago betrayal. But the statute of limitations is nothing more than a legal category, incapable of relieving the President of his itch.

Colonel Labaro, the commander of the regiment of palace cuirassiers who accompanies the President everywhere, helps take a step in the right direction:

“May I offer a critical remark? You are overestimating the importance of the truth.”

But this is a completely different way of living—when knowing the truth ceases to be a prerequisite for making a decision. Yet gradually, day by day, situation by situation, Mariano begins to see what life looks like beyond this fixation. To understand that the truth is not just facts as such, from which one can piece together some kind of puzzle, but also simply a given of life (“Today I had to see the truth up close, while the law always shows it from a distance”).

Then, in place of the need to feel unshakable certainty, comes mercy, in which, as our hero noted, there is the beauty of doubt. Then, finally, it becomes possible to reconcile the law and life, make all the necessary decisions, and move on.
