The film "Audition" left audiences speechless at the Rotterdam Film Festival. Starting out as a sentimental melodrama, it suddenly and without warning transforms into a ruthless and vicious thriller. This is cinema at its finest, exploring all the nuances and details of shocking female sadism.

Eihi Shina played her role so strikingly, revealing to the audience all the wonders of the transformation of the human personality, that one can only take one’s hat off to her. The same goes for Rio Ishibashi, a seemingly intelligent man who has fallen into the clutches of a cruel sadist. Takashi Miike is simply a genius of the thriller genre, and we can only thank him for such a shocking and ambiguous film.
