16 years after the disappearance of the "Lima Project", strange outbursts of energy begin to occur on Earth, disabling electrical systems and wreaking havoc and destruction. According to the American Space Agency, the signal comes from Neptune, and now the son of the famous astronaut, Major Roy McBride, is entrusted with a responsible mission. He must get to the Martian base and from there try to contact the supposedly living father.

For the American director and screenwriter James Gray, the topic of attraction of a person to the unknown takes an important place in the work. In his previous work, he told the story of a British traveler and explorer, Percy Fawcett, who mysteriously disappeared into the Amazon. This time, he decided to go further and leave the borders of our planet, going to the far corners of the solar system. But Gray is primarily interested in the inner world of the heroes, and only then the process of travel. The picture received for the most part a warm welcome from critics, but was coolly received by ordinary viewers.

The picture preserves the standard genre boundaries of space films. Before us is the science fiction, adventure thriller and human drama all rolled into one. However, do not wait for a large-scale blockbuster, here is a completely different scenario design. Space travel is an important attribute of the film, its frame, but not the basis. In the foreground are questions of a philosophical nature, the themes of existentialism and loneliness. This is a psychological immersion in the consciousness of a person incapable of the life of a simple person, the main character wants to run away to where it is quiet and no one will touch him. The cosmos looks like an ideal refuge for such individuals.

The metaphysical journey of the protagonist to the farthest planet of the solar system, Neptune, is a search for his place in the world around him, although in reality it is a top-secret task of the government. There are notes of religiosity, spiritual liberation of man under the oppressive influence of the modern world. The eternal problem of the relationship of fathers and children did not pass by. A philosophical treatise on space coexists with the standard set of a fantastic action movie. Chases on moon rovers, clashes with unknown enemies and political games of a powerful corporation. A rather interesting symbiosis of opposite directions. There are references to both deep sci-fi films (Interstlar, Solaris) and adventure action movies (Space Cowboys).

The picture is magnificent from the visual side. Cosmic landscapes and actions in the vastness of the Universe were shot with skill and perfectly correspond to the best examples of the genre. Events develop slowly, which is facilitated by the off-screen reasoning of the hero about the issues of his existence and methodical musical accompaniment. However, the atmosphere of cosmic alienation is perfectly transmitted.

Brad Pitt only gets better with age. And here he perfectly played the role of the Stoic astronaut, a cold-blooded professional, but an internally lost person. For him, a journey into outer space is a way to finally understand yourself. Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland recall the magnificent old guard of world cinema. But certainly all the action is centered around one person.

To the stars, this is an existential cosmic drama, in which the science fiction is combined in an original way - science fiction about the squeaks of extraterrestrial intelligence, an adventure thriller about a dangerous journey and a rustic action movie with sometimes clichéd elements. A very personal drama of a lonely person who prefers the deep spaces of outer space to the earthly life of a simple person. I recommend viewing.
