Story Movie

Larry Flint was a hero of the 1970s—an era of the sexual revolution, drugs, and cultural upheaval. He realized that people needed more than just TV and weekend picnics. They needed entertainment.

With his remarkable intuition, he decided to take a step that would change his life forever and divide society into those who were for him and those who were against him. He began publishing a porn magazine. But "Hustler" became more than just a magazine. It was a challenge to society. And the offended public decided to punish Larry Flint.

Review 4K Movie

The film "The People vs. Larry Flint" gives us plenty to think about. A lot to think about, indeed, because the issues raised by this film are multifaceted.

Let’s start with the fact that Flint is not a fictional character but a real person, and as an individual, he was—let’s put it this way—a hero of his time in his country. The sexual revolution in the U.S. influenced the masses, and Larry was one of its champions. He was the first to take the plunge and launch the first porn magazine. Undoubtedly, the well-known "Playboy" already existed at that time; however, compared to *Hustler*, it was merely light erotic reading.

Naturally, the morally upright public was opposed to such innovations, and throughout the film we see Larry fighting for the right to express his initiative in this way. This conflict in the film serves as an allegory for the real situation in America during the 1970s and 1980s. The promotion of sex, the spread of drugs—all contrary to morality—and this is precisely where the question arises: Was America right to allow freedom—freedom of speech—to prevail?

However, when complete freedom of speech arrives, chaos will ensue—chaos in which people simply cannot listen to one another, when everyone asserts their right to speak and act. For a fully democratic society and its main component—freedom of speech—we would have to live in an ideal society where people are also ideal. Therefore, freedom of speech in its fullest sense is a myth that everyone wants to believe in.

But in the U.S., the very possibility of this freedom of speech has become the defining drug of the era, to which young people and all subsequent generations have quickly become addicted. And the country is proud of this; it is its greatest source of pride.

To be honest, the film causes cognitive dissonance in me. On the one hand, I support Flint’s aspirations and agree with him that “Sex is better than war.” It’s hard to disagree with that. And if you look at it from the perspective of democratic America, a figure like Larry Flint was necessary for the country at that time. But on the other hand, I despise him. Freedom of speech in this context influenced not just a generation, but the very development of the country. Moral decay, a corrupting, rotting society, a lack of spiritual values—only sex and money—all of this makes me, to some extent, hate Flint and “heroes” like him.
