The two orphaned Gelhorn twin sisters move from the capital to a small provincial town, where they are placed under the guardianship of their Uncle Gustav, the head of the local religious brotherhood. One of the sisters falls in love with Count Karnstein, who sacrificed one of the village girls to Satan and was turned into a vampire as a result. Soon, she, too, becomes a vampire.

This Hammer Studios film is known by various titles: *The Gemini Twins*, *Twins of Dracula*, and *The Virgin Vampires*. It is said to be based on Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s short story “Carmilla,” which revealed the terrifying secret of vampires long before *Dracula*. It’s no surprise, then, that the film’s characters hadn’t read Bram Stoker’s book and were therefore very surprised to learn that burning vampires at the stake is useless. They must be defeated with a sharp blade and a sharpened aspen stake.

Gustav Weil (Peter Kashung), the leader of the local witch hunters, is powerless against Count Karnstein, a devil-worshipper. But the matter takes on a personal dimension when Weil’s nieces—twins and orphans—arrive from faraway Venice. The young women are in their prime, and thus catch the count’s eye. One of the sisters is God-fearing; the other is seeking adventure. Count Karnstein makes a sacrifice to the dark forces, revives a female vampire, and soon ceases to be reflected in the mirror himself.

The rest of the story revolves around the twins’ relationship and their uncle Gustav’s determination to continue the fight against the devil, even if his own flesh and blood stands in his way.

It is said that the Collinson sisters, who played the leading female roles, were crowned “Miss October 1970” by *Playboy* magazine shortly before the premiere, and thus served as a tempting draw for audiences.

This is the third film in the so-called “Karnstein Trilogy,” though it’s not exactly a standout.
