Review 4K Movie
Perhaps I’ll start with the fact that in order to fully experience this film you need to be an American, and not quite young. The film is primarily about the era. This is a kind of divide between the obsolete old America with its cinema, with its music, with its society and the upcoming new modern era, where there is practically no room for happy endings, romance, the spirit of freedom and other attributes of bygone days. The perception of the film will directly depend on what kind of baggage you will watch it with. In this regard, the film is not self-sufficient, and if that era passed by you, then perhaps 90% of the film will pass by you. So, if this era is far from you and incomprehensible, but you are a lover of high-quality cinema, then you can still enjoy the movie from a technical point of view. Here you have amazing camera work, color, staging - everything is beyond praise. Actors act out superbly, and even on episodic roles. Everything is in its place. It is also very interesting to watch the wrong side of the movie making process, which is shown here in great detail. But, not knowing the context, most of the idea will still pass you by. So, as for me, the minimum with which you have to sit down for a film is at least in general terms to find out who Charles Manson is, what kind of sect he created, what they are famous for. Read about Sharon Tate and the tragedy that erupted in her house. Well, it’s good to have at least basic ideas about the American post-war society, what happened there in music, cinema, and social movements. With all this knowledge, the film will sparkle with new colors.
If you evaluate your impressions of the film in a few sentences, then, perhaps, I do not remember when I experienced such a heap of a wide variety of emotions when watching. Sometimes I was overwhelmed, even from a nostalgic smile, melancholy, pleasure from the visual part, to laughter, applause and tears. I don’t know how this was conceived, but in recent years not a single film has squeezed out so many conflicting emotions from me, and very different ones. And now, having watched the film 3 times already, I still can’t understand what emotions I have left from it. Perhaps the same heap of the most diverse feelings.
The film develops very slowly, allowing the viewer to fully enjoy that era. A lot of details, in the form of posters, TV shows, songs that you immediately notice. A whole series of real characters that allow you to look at it as a real story. A huge merit of Tarantino that real historical characters in him seem to live their own lives. The director does not burden them with some kind of excessive plot burden. We are like watching newsreels. Sharon Tate was especially great. In general, I think that Tarantino created a real monument to her. She seems to be alive, talking with friends, going to the movies, getting ready for the appearance of the child, decorating the nursery. The evening before the tragedy is shown, where everything went as usual, gatherings with friends, Sharon has a slight melancholy in his soul, either from the heat, or from pregnancy ...
But despite all the ease and colorfulness of the story, knowing the real story, the presence of impending evil is constantly felt. That it will certainly come and the tale will end. This is in the moments when Manson comes to the house of the future victim, and in the scene at the ranch, and indeed anxiety is in the air.
Many people discuss the ending ... Yes, I also applauded the director in the ending. You seem to expect this and at the same time unexpectedly. But Tarantino, perhaps, showed exactly what all those familiar with that tragedy wanted most.
Most of my emotions were caused not by the ending, but by the epilogue in the last minutes. The dialogue between the characters, anxiety, meeting, hugs and everything went back to normal. At least on the screen, the tale continued on ... this is for me the quintessence of the whole film on an emotional level. Some incomprehensible mixture of melancholy, smile, sadness, contentment.
In general, for me it is, of course, the best film of the year and, perhaps, the best Tarantino film, no matter who says it. The film shows the watershed between the two eras and it is clearly perceived as a monument to the passing era, a monument to the tragedy, which, among a series of other tragedies of that time (like Almamont) divided the society into before and after, a monument to the people who lived there.
