Story Movie

John Sedley was born with a disfigured face, and this, combined with a difficult childhood, sealed his fate—he became a criminal. During an armed robbery, John and his friend Mikey were framed by their partners; as a result, John ended up in prison, but he didn’t rat anyone out, hoping to be released and take revenge. In prison, with the help of a compassionate surgeon, he receives a new face, and eventually he is released under an amnesty. John begins a dangerous game to settle the score with his betrayers.

Review 4K Movie

The film’s plot tells the story of a man whose face was disfigured from birth. His mother abandoned him, visiting him only occasionally at the boarding school; the other children teased him; no one offered a helping hand; and Johnny ultimately made HIS own choice—he turned to a life of crime, because nowhere else would accept him due to his appearance. He wasn’t really welcome there either, but after ending up in prison, he still managed to befriend one man who became like a brother to him and served as a family to him. Then one day, they had to pull off a job with a couple of gangsters to keep their bar from being shut down. But they get double-crossed—his friend is killed, and Johnny ends up in prison.

Some time later, a kind doctor, hoping to change him, gives him a facelift, hoping that he’ll turn his life around (“Johnny’s new world will be whatever he makes of it…”), but Johnny has his own plans... You can read all of this in the synopsis, but I decided to expand on it a bit so it’s clear what the story is actually about. Let’s move on to the components.

The film is based on a very good message. Remember the “Boomer” slogan? Something like “It’s not us, it’s life”… Here, everything is much more honest. Here, it’s “we are who we are, and life is what we make of it OURSELVES.” The film’s main character isn’t some kind of Robin Hood. Quite the opposite—he does everything for his own sake and is fully aware of it. He basically has nothing to lose—his friend was killed, and no one else needed him back then. Actually, as you watch, you realize what kind of crap you sometimes put people through when you look at everything through “rose-colored glasses.” So how exactly was this Johnny getting in everyone’s way? His looks? Well, if you don’t like a person, why are you picking on him? You’re hurting him without even realizing it. Besides, you don’t even look in the mirror yourselves. It’s all really tough.

I have to say, Mickey Rourke played his role absolutely brilliantly! It might even be his best role yet. Lance Henriksen, Morgan Freeman, Ellen Barkin, Forest Whitaker—truly powerful actors—also give stunning performances.

Walter Hill is, as always, superb. I love the heist scene at the beginning and the finale. The direction is incredibly powerful. Of course, the cinematographer deserves just as much credit. Seriously, the heist scene is shot as if it were captured by surveillance cameras, showing every single tiny detail.

And the music—Walter Hill once again called on Raya Kudera to compose the score, while refusing to license any individual tracks. The music turned out to be very beautiful, dramatic, and immersive. Well, that’s to be expected, as always.

The result is a powerful film—heavy and sad. I don’t know why, but I personally felt sorry for Johnny. Probably because he’s honest and doesn’t blame his life’s troubles on anyone else; he doesn’t look for scapegoats, but takes responsibility for his own actions and doesn’t seek sympathy or pity.
And by the way, the moral of the story is this: no matter what you try to change in a person—their appearance, their present—you can’t change their past… And sooner or later, it will resurface, and the impact will depend on what it was like… Don’t ruin your life with unnecessary mistakes, because, after all, “what goes around comes around”…
