The filmmakers transposed William Shakespeare’s immortal tragedy *Romeo and Juliet* to the harsh streets of mid-20th-century New York, transforming the feuding clans into rival street gangs.

Dance becomes the primary narrative language here, but its nature has changed radically. The production’s choreographic numbers are literally steeped in both hidden and overt aggression. Every sharp jump, synchronized snap of the fingers, or swift turn of the body serves not to create a festive atmosphere, but to visualize the harsh, uncompromising confrontation between two semi-criminal groups—the “Rockets” and the “Sharks.” The dancers do not flirt with the audience; they convey the intensity and hostility of the back alleys.

Russ Tamblyn, in the role of Riff, is the true technical highlight of the film. Audiences who remember him from his dazzling performance in the musical *Hit the Deck*, where he was noted for his incredible, sustained splits, will find him here at the peak of his physical form. In *West Side Story*, Tamblyn brings this extremely difficult acrobatic-ballet move to absolute perfection, demonstrating astonishing grace and athleticism.

The film leaves a complex, emotionally heavy impression. The filmmakers force the viewer to confront a brutal reality, but we should at least thank them for sparing the modern “Juliet” in the finale—otherwise, the ending of this urban drama would have been utterly bleak and sorrowful. A monumental, powerful film that demands a certain emotional disposition from the viewer.
