Who would have thought that Dale McCusick (Mel Gibson) and Nick Frisch (Kurt Russell)—best friends, no less—would end up on opposite sides of the law?! Nevertheless, that’s exactly what the plot of “Tequila Sunrise” is all about. Dale is a drug dealer who, incidentally, plans to quit the criminal life (though we know it’s not that easy to walk away from this business), while Nick hates dealers of illegal substances and drugs and fights them with everything he’s got.

But when it comes to his friend, Nick turns a blind eye. But what if, in addition to the line between law and lawlessness, a woman also comes between the friends?! Will their friendship withstand such a test of strength???

For me, while watching this film, this question was the most pressing (after it became clear that there would be a love triangle here), and undoubtedly, this plot element added not only interest for the viewer but also drama to the entire script.

Another question I found myself asking was: would Raúl Juliá, who also appeared in this film, really get so little screen time (considering that he appeared only once in the first half of the film)? But the answer to this question came in the second half of the film, while the love triangle remained a central and persistent element right up to the finale.

Although the film features action stars of that era—Russell and Gibson—that doesn’t mean you should expect a fast-paced plot from “Tequila Sunrise.”
Here, the main focus is on the relationships between friends against the backdrop of their infatuation with one woman. In other words, the film can be viewed as a sort of crime love story.

Speaking of which, that very femme fatale who tore Dale and Nick’s hearts apart is Michelle Pfeiffer. To be honest, I didn’t recognize her at all—she doesn’t look like herself, not even like the Catwoman from the 1992 film *Batman Returns*. Even though there’s only a four-year gap between these two movies! I waited a long time, wondering when Pfeiffer would show up… And then I realized: she’d been on screen almost from the very beginning of the movie!

It’s hard to call this a fast-paced film; after all, most of what happens on screen is far from action-packed, and the plot only really picks up in the final third, when certain plot details—which had previously remained vague—become clear.

Director Robert Town assembled a solid cast for this film, and having Russell, Gibson, and Pfeiffer in the lead roles is certainly impressive. In general, this is what sets films from the ’80s and ’90s apart: in them, A-list stars are on equal footing in terms of their importance to the plot. Take, for example, *Tango & Cash*: Stallone and Russell are the two main characters.
